'An American In Paris' is a Hit in France, Comes to Broadway in the Spring

'An American In Paris' is a Hit in France, Comes to Broadway in the Spring | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it
The An American in Paris premiere will run through January at Paris' Chatelet Theater before coming to Broadway in the spring. Since its opening, the performance is getting rave reviews and has completely sold out. It's not hard to see why: The stage comes alive with the story of an American artist and the young French dancer he falls in love with. The original movie musical was directed by Vincente Minnelli, with music by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin.

Censorship, "Mental Illness" Overrun France

Censorship, "Mental Illness" Overrun France | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it

...On December 22, a third man, also screaming "Allahu Akbar" ploughed his van into a Christmas market in Nantes. He then stabbed himself, and is in hospital. The police and the media said that he was a "mental patient." He will be sent to an insane asylum.

No one knows how many "mental patients" are ready to act and scream "Allahu Akbar" in France. Police unions have said that if too many "mental patients" decided to act, the police would not able to protect the population. They added that there were not even enough police to protect police officers likely to be attacked.

Mental patients, screaming "Allahu Akbar," are storming France.

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said, "We have never faced such a danger." He has not defined the danger. He decided to send a thousand soldiers to patrol the streets. He did not say if they were supposed to fight mental illness.

On December 23, a fourth man screaming "Allahu Akbar" was arrested for "violent behavior" in the city of Le Mans. He was sent directly to a psychiatrist, of course. He is a "mental patient." Authorities strangely said he might be "contagious."

Islamic State to systematically target Europe in 2015: French expert

Islamic State to systematically target Europe in 2015: French expert | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it
In an interview with Sputnik, well-known French journalist and Middle East intelligence services expert Jean-Michel Vernochet said that he foresees an impending Islamic State group attack on Europe in the very near future.

According to Vernochet, there are some who, in addition to seeking "to transform Europe into the land of Islam," also "want to turn it into the land of war."

"You’ve probably heard about the recent events in France – in Nantes and in Dijon, in the suburbs of large cities," Vernochet recalls. "Police officers attacked by people wielding knives; cars ramming into crowds –in Nantes and in Dijon! Some people were seriously hurt. And more of these incidents keep happening."

The expert notes that while "authorities are attempting to downplay [these incidents] as unrelated outbreaks," in reality "there is a connection. The perpetrators are being portrayed as unstable individuals. Let us assume that they acted on personal motives, as it makes things appear much better. Obviously they are unstable [individuals], which is why they did all these things, but there are many others who carefully consider their actions, and whose [terror] actions may be much more effective as a result."

In France, Vestiges of the Great War’s Bloody End

In France, Vestiges of the Great War’s Bloody End | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it
A tour of trenches, bunkers and memorials in the forests of Lorraine, where the last battles of World War I were waged

By the time it abruptly ended at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918, between 15 million and 20 million men had perished in the First World War. That statistic can be difficult to grasp, much less believe; but hike through a couple of forests in the hills of Lorraine, and you begin to see how it happened.

What’s now known as Bois Brûlé, or the burnt woods — scorched in four years of fighting — was forest primeval until September 1914, when the Germans came. The month before, just as the war was beginning, they had stormed in and seized the Argonne Forest and the heights above the Meuse River, territory of tremendous strategic value; now they charged into the Woëvre Plain, to the east, and quickly captured a couple hundred square miles of equal importance, cutting the roads from the industrial center of Nancy to Verdun, an old walled city ringed by forts and seen by many as an indispensable bulwark in the east. They killed a great many French soldiers in the process.

Le Bal Populaire: The Revival of Traditional Neighbourhood Dances in Paris | France Today

Le Bal Populaire: The Revival of Traditional Neighbourhood Dances in Paris | France Today | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it

A sea of beaming faces streams out into the warm Paris evening. Two girls with vintage 1930s hairstyles waltz along under the street lights, laughing. In a gritty corner of north-east Paris, ‘B-boys’ in baseball caps hum under their breath, sparking each other’s cigarettes, and elderly couples wind their way homewards, arm-in-arm. Inside the cavernous venue, Le Centquatre-Paris, the band snap shut the cases holding their accordions and violins. A record 1,200 people had danced their hearts out at the monthly ‘bal populaire’, and Parisians of all ages and backgrounds are rediscovering this phenomenon, which is central to the city’s history.
“If you go to Buenos Aires, you expect to hear the tango, and today if you go to Paris, you can expect to hear musette” explains Florent Sepchat, accordionist with the band Le Balluche de la Saugrenue. He’s part of a new generation of young musicians who are remixing and reviving the typically Parisian bal populaire sound.

These dances in working-class neighbourhoods make a spirited comeback whenever Paris is silenced and stifled. And this reincarnation is no exception. Far from being just another media-hyped trend, the events’ euphoric atmosphere shows how much Parisians are feeling an urge to get together, reclaim their space and culture, and have some genuine, unbridled fun.

Kebabs as a Political Statement in France ('Kebabaphobia' joins the Lexicon!)

Kebabs as a Political Statement in France ('Kebabaphobia' joins the Lexicon!) | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it
PARIS — From the kitchen of the luxury Mandarin Oriental Hotel, the Michelin two-star chef Thierry Marx is waging a mini-campaign against culinary racism. He is making kebabs.

In recent months, officials of the far right National Front have attacked the kebab, France’s most popular fast-food import from the East. For them, the proliferation of shops selling hunks of meat roasting on a spit is nothing less than a threat to the country’s identity.

“I grew up in a rough neighborhood of Paris with 100 nationalities of immigrants,” said Mr. Marx, who also runs a school for street chefs in eastern Paris. “Sometimes people give me a hard time when I cook like this. But for me, symbols are important. Street food is the driving force of integration.”

Mr. Marx’s kebabs, which he sometimes serves at Sunday brunch, are more designer than street in style. They involve shaping pieces of saddle of lamb rolled in bread crumbs and cumin into slim cones, filled with chopped dried fruit and herbs and sautéed in butter and oil. He serves them with hummus the consistency of peanut butter, yogurt sauce topped with chopped cucumber, a semolina grain and puffy pita bread.

Kebabaphobia surfaced in France in far-right-wing blogs in 2013 and as a campaign issue in the French local elections and elections for the European Parliament last spring

France to deploy soldiers after spate of attacks

France to deploy soldiers after spate of attacks | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it

France is to step up police and military patrols in areas frequented by the public following recent attacks, Prime Minister Manuel Valls has said.

He said up to 300 soldiers would be deployed around the country to boost security over the Christmas period.

The attacks, seemingly unrelated, in Nantes, Dijon and Tours have left more than 20 people injured.

In the latest incident, 10 people were hurt when a van was driven into a Christmas market in Nantes on Monday.

In Dijon on Sunday, a driver shouting "God is great" in Arabic ploughed into pedestrians, injuring 13 people.

On Saturday, a man using the same phrase was shot dead by police after attacking them.

Speaking earlier on Tuesday, Mr Valls sought to reassure the public, saying there was "no link" between the incidents.

Record 17,000 rally against 'Islamisation' in Germany

Record 17,000 rally against 'Islamisation' in Germany | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it

BERLIN (AFP) -

A record 17,000 anti-Islamic protesters rallied for their tenth demonstration in as many weeks Monday in eastern Germany, celebrating the rise of their far-right movement by singing Christmas carols.

Germany has for weeks grappled with the emergence of the "Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the Occident" or PEGIDA, whose ranks in the city of Dresden have swelled rapidly from just a few hundred in October.

About 4,000 counter-demonstrators marched through the city under the slogan "Dresden Nazi-free", warning that there was no room for racism and xenophobia in the country that perpetrated the Holocaust.

Most PEGIDA followers insist they are not Nazis but patriots who worry about the "watering down" of their Christian-rooted culture and traditions. They often accuse mainstream political parties of betraying them, and the media of lying.

Drone spotted over Belgium nuclear plant after 20 drones noted over French plants since October | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it

An unexplained drone has been spotted flying over a Belgium nuclear facility, a day after one of the plant's reactors came back on line after a four-month closure caused by sabotage.

The mystery appearance by an unmanned aircraft on Saturday, on which Belgian authorities refused to provide much detail, resembles a spate of similar drone sightings over nuclear plants in neighbouring France this autumn.

Around 20 unidentified drones have been spotted over nuclear plants since October throughout France.

"We can confirm that the East Flanders prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into a drone flight over the Doel nuclear plant," a spokesman for the investigation told Belga news agency.

More military deployed in France following attacks

More military deployed in France following attacks | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it

NANTES – More troops were deployed on Tuesday throughout France following a spate of attacks in the country over the past few days.

On Monday night, a bullet fired from an air gun crashed through a window of a Paris synagogue’s office. The David Ben Ichay Synagogue’s rabbi and his assistant were on site when the bullet was fired.

French police are searching for two suspects who were outside the synagogue about 10 minutes before the attack, the JSSNews website reported.

Surveillance cameras did not provide much information on the incident, according to the website, and it was unclear whether the shots originated from the street or a nearby building.

France, Germany Urge Checks on Jihadists' Travel - Schengen under Strain

France, Germany Urge Checks on Jihadists' Travel - Schengen under Strain | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it
France and Germany, traditionally among the fiercest defenders of document-free travel within the 26-nation Schengen travel zone, are calling for changes to counter the increasing number of Europeans leaving to wage jihad in Iraq and Syria.

They aren’t the only countries grappling with how to address the problem of their citizens leaving to fight in a war abroad.

In January, Britain, which is outside the Schengen zone, is expected to unveil legislation providing for the seizure or cancellation of passports of British nationals linked to armed groups. Britons who have gone and fought will be prevented from returning home, rendering them stateless.

According to British Prime Minister David Cameron, there is “no opt-out from dealing with this” challenge of foreigners leaving to fuel the conflict in the Mideast.

When President Francois Hollande unveiled a 'super-tax' on the rich in 2012, some feared an exodus of business, sporting and artistic talent. One adviser warned it was a Socialist step too far that would turn France into 'Cuba without sun'.

Two years on, with the tax due to expire at the end of this month, the mass emigration has not happened. But the damage to France's appeal as a home for top earners has been great, and the pickings from the levy paltry.

French Appeal Court Overturns Conviction of Woman Prosecuted for Insulting Islam - Breitbart

French Appeal Court Overturns Conviction of Woman Prosecuted for Insulting Islam - Breitbart | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it

A French woman who protested a temporary tent-abattoir set up in a car-park near a hospital to ritually slaughter animals for Eid has had her conviction overturned, after she appealed a €4,500 fine and three month jail sentence for calling Islam a “cesspit”.

Retired school-teacher Christine Tasin, 58, was convicted under an 1881 law after the prosecution argued criticism of Islam was the equivalent of inciting violence against Muslims, and that in addition to the normal punishment of a fine and imprisonment, Tasin should also be stripped of the right to hold public office.

Her subsequent appeal was supported by Dr. Daniel Pipes’ American-based Legal Project, an advisory and funding body established to “protect the right in the West to freely discuss Islam, radical Islam, terrorism, and terrorist funding”, who have also backed Dutch Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders after his prosecution for criticising Islam.

Overturning the conviction last week, the court confirmed that Islamophobia and blasphemy was not a crime in France, despite the claims made by some Muslim groups after her initial conviction in August.
