Rekindling sparks of life in France’s abandoned ghost villages

Rekindling sparks of life in France’s abandoned ghost villages | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it

Amid picnics and parties, former residents and descendants have not lost all hope of returning to their ruined settlements. Earlier this year, in a freshly mown hayfield on the Var highlands of south-eastern France, about 60 people held a picnic. It could have been a family reunion, but there was not much nostalgia in the air. When the former inhabitants of Brovès return to their land for their annual pilgrimage every spring, they mostly remember the pain of being expropriated by the army, 40 years earlier. However some of them still nurse the dream they might one day return for good.

What Your Choice of Cafe Says About You

What Your Choice of Cafe Says About You | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it
Cities around the world suffer from “sundown segregation.”

There is a down-at-heel café a few doors up from me in the working-class neighbourhood of Paris where I live that has, over the past eighteen months or so, done everything it could to attract a new, presumably younger, clientele. First there was a hand-written sign announcing the arrival of table-football, then another hand-written sign advertised five-euro mojitos, another written in the same hand sought a female bartender, probably to offset the small but overwhelmingly middle-aged and male customer base. During the World Cup, a Brazilian flag hung in the window. None of these efforts seemed to draw many people in—there was rarely ever more than half a dozen clustered around the over-lit zinc bar. Earlier this month, it closed its doors, one of thousands of cafés that shut in France each year. It is currently being renovated and will no doubt reopen as a more upscale establishment, something the previous owner tried to do but failed for want of funds.

Love France but feel intimidated?Just say 'Vive la difference’ | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it
Take cheese, for example, which I used to think of as a yellow square wrapped in plastic. [...] that cheese board â€" on which every gooey, stinky and moldy product was the happy creation of a local artisan â€" was my invitation into l’art de vivre â€" the art of living. With five weeks of paid vacation, plus every Catholic holiday ever invented, the French have become experts at living well. [...] my lack of anything like fluency doesn’t matter â€" the French people value politeness just as much as they take pride in their language. Cooking schools abound in France, offering nonthreatening and personal experiences, including trips to markets. All the stuff that matters to me â€" taking a good lead off first base, executing a squeeze bunt to perfection, matching up a batter against a pitcher â€" would be nonsense to a French person. The next time I mortify a French friend by putting a little ketchup on my meat, I’ll just remember that with two outs and a full count, he’ll have no idea why I know the runner will be off with the pitch.

Christine Lagarde, the head of the International Monetary Fund, said Wednesday she has been placed under official investigation for negligence in a long-running French corruption probe dating to her days as France’s finance minister.

The probe stems from her oversight as finance minister of a 2008 dispute that ultimately produced multimillion-dollar payouts by an arbitration panel to a French business tycoon, Bernard Tapie, a friend of then-President Nicolas Sarkozy.

In France, a state of disarray | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it

Has France had enough of the state?

It’s no secret France is in a shambles, and attempts by President François Hollande to right a listing government continue to fall flat. While the economy flails under the same forces that are battering other nations, it’s the seemingly intractable political woes that are at the heart of France’s misery. In ROB Insight, Carl Mortished examines the parallels with the limping Britain of the late 70s that lurched from crisis to crisis, and only broke out of the doldrums by the election of a government intent on serious reform. With Mr. Hollande’s popularity seriously in the dumps, voters may turn to National Front Leader Marine Le Pen in the hopes they find their own Iron Lady to sort out the mess.

The Timbits and pieces of a merger deal

The union of flame-broiling fast-food icon Burger King and Canada’s biggest icon in the business, Tim Horton’s, has generated some heat, particularly over the issue of corporate “tax inversions.” But that’s a red herring, as any tax benefits that could accrue to the newly enlarged BK as it takes up residence in Canada will be nowhere near the big gains that have motivated other deals and got the dander up of U.S. politicians. So what’s the deal really all about? In Streetwise, Dave Morris picks through the nuts and bolts of the merger, and finds there’s plenty to like about it.

16% of French Citizens Support ISIS, Poll Finds

16% of French Citizens Support ISIS, Poll Finds | The France News Net - Latest stories | Scoop.it

One in six French citizens sympathises with the Islamist militant group ISIS, also known as Islamic State, a poll released this week found.

The poll of European attitudes towards the group, carried out by ICM for Russian news agency Rossiya Segodnya, revealed that 16% of French citizens have a positive opinion of ISIS. This percentage increases among younger respondents, spiking at 27% for those aged 18-24.

Newsweek’s France Correspondent, Anne-Elizabeth Moutet, was unsurprised by the news. “This is the ideology of young French Muslims from immigrant backgrounds,” she said, “unemployed to the tune of 40%, who’ve been deluged by satellite TV and internet propaganda.” She pointed to a correlation between support for ISIS and rising anti-Semitism in France, adding that “these are the same people who torch synagogues”.
