Iraqi Soldier - FamousPicturesMagazine

Iraqi Soldier - FamousPicturesMagazine | Information censorship in America | Scoop.it
Sue's Scoop's insight:

Another article on the censorship of information during the 1st Gulf War. One war photographers' view is that accurate portrayal informs the public and encourages healthy debate, i.e. "Is this something we want to be involved in?" Unfortunately because that DIDN'T happen here, Americans have the misperception of that war as a "clean war" when in fact estimates are it may have killed up to 200,000 soldiers and up to the SAME number of civilians.

In fact, the unstated U.S. strategy was to conduct unprecedented air strikes in order to reduce U.S. military losses at the expense of thousands of Iraqi civilian casualties.

OpEdNews Article: Article: Will Americans Ever Get To See Al Jazeera?

OpEdNews Article: Article: Will Americans Ever Get To See Al Jazeera? | Information censorship in America | Scoop.it
Time Warner executives are sensitive to a competitive business environment and polarized political culture. They are very aware that Al Jazeera is considered "controversial" even as competitors fear its reputation for news excellence.
Sue's Scoop's insight:

It would be interesting to find out why Time Warner doesn't want to carry them. Especially with the push going on in Washington right now to further consolidate the media and information we receive, anything that even hints of media censorship of news always makes me nervous - particularly when it's news that doesn't conveniently mirror the same propaganda that has now come to define the rest of our mainstream news. Whether Americans would agree with it or not; IMO they should at least be given the opportunity to hear it/see it/weigh in on it/debate it "on the air".

Sue's Scoop's insight:

A MUST SEE movie for all Americans. It describes in detail the role U.S. media has played in keeping Americans in the dark about what's really going on with, and what's really behind, all of our wars.

Sue's Scoop's insight:

The 1st Gulf War was one of the key turning points for the U.S. Media, where they abandoned the historic journalistic practice/ethic of maintaining neutrality in exchange for becoming the P.R. for advancement of U.S. military causes.

BBC NEWS | Middle East | Picture power: Death of an Iraqi soldier

BBC NEWS | Middle East | Picture power: Death of an Iraqi soldier | Information censorship in America | Scoop.it
Photographer Ken Jarecke talks about his famous image of an Iraqi soldier burnt to death in the front cab of a destroyed lorry.
Sue's Scoop's insight:

From the 1st Gulf War - an example of how war coverage is often "shared" amongst new organizations, and the process by which any controversial articles and photos can and do get censored right at the AP source in New York before it even reached the editors of the newspapers.

Of note is that this particular graphic and story DID get published in the U.K. As Ken Jarecke, the photographer who took this shot said, "It caused quite a controversy in London, which is what images like that are meant to do. They're meant to basically cause a debate in the public: "Is this something we want to be involved in?" How can you decide to have a war if you are not fully informed?

Unfortunately, for Americans this is EXACTLY what's happening. It is impossible to have a democracy when the American people are intentionally being kept in the dark about what's going on - not only in the war, but in ALL key areas of our government.
