Cumberbatch on why Julian Assange refused to meet him - Telegraph

Cumberbatch on why Julian Assange refused to meet him - Telegraph | The Fifth Estate | Scoop.it

Benedict Cumberbatch is a big fan of Julian Assange, but the WikiLeaks founder is no fan of the actor.

Assange refused to meet Cumberbatch or help him with his portrayal of him for the film The Fifth Estate, which has just finished shooting.

"He didn't want to condone the film because he thought – hopefully erroneously when he sees the end product – that the project would castigate him and portray a negative side of his enterprise," the busy Cumberbatch told me when we talked at the Corinthia Hotel in London, where he was promoting Star Trek Into Darkness.

"He didn't want to meet me because he feels the source materials we've based the movie on were poisonous to his account of the events. When he sees it I hope he feels that it's more balanced. I think he will. I hope he will."

The Fifth Estate tells Assange's story from 2007-2010 and ends with the leaking of the U.S. diplomatic cables.

"We're still trying to understand the impact of WikiLeaks and what he has given the world with that extraordinary idea to create an anonymous whistle-blowing website," said Cumberbatch. "It was an amazing thing to reinvestigate someone who has been mired in controversy and actually realise that he was profoundly gifted and should be celebrated."

Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange: Producer of documentary ‘We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks’ weighs in | EW.com

Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange: Producer of documentary ‘We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks’ weighs in | EW.com | The Fifth Estate | Scoop.it

Right now, mention of the name Benedict Cumberbatch brings to mind characters like Sherlock Holmes and his mystery-until-now Star Trek Into Darkness villain. But later this year the buzz around the British actor will likely shift to another role: Julian Assange, co-creator of the controversial website WikiLeaks.

Assange’s story has already made a trip to the silver screen with We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks, a documentary directed by Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room). The film’s producer Marc Shmuger (former co-chairman of Universal Pictures) has revealed some thoughts on the upcoming project starring Cumberbatch as Assange, The Fifth Estate.

“I read the script, so I do know a bit about it,” Shmuger told the audience at a Seattle International Film Festival screening of We Steal Secrets on Saturday that was also attended by Gibney. “It’s a very good cast, and it tells the story of Daniel Domscheit-Berg and Julian Assange coming together and building this organization and the excitement in the early days of these idealists who were trying to change the world. It ultimately kind of [follows] the model of putting the band together and watching them fall apart. It’s a valid approach to tell the story.”

Yes, but can you call it a documentary -- or is it a drama?
Catherine Moo's comment, May 24, 2013 9:20 PM
Do you mean whether "We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks" is a documentary or drama? I have not watch it, not sure whether I can get it on DVD here. I don't think "The Fifth Estate" starring BC is a documentary, drama perhaps?

Oliver Stone visits Assange at embassy

Oliver Stone visits Assange at embassy | The Fifth Estate | Scoop.it

OSCAR-WINNING director Oliver Stone has given a boost to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange by visiting him at the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

The Born on the Fourth of July filmmaker met with the controversial whistleblower on April 4 and later took to Twitter to detail their "hopeful talk". Stone tweeted, "(It was also) a sad occasion in that Julian could not follow me out the door. He lives in a tiny room with great modesty and discipline. (He has a) strong mind, no sun, friends who visit, work to be done."

Assange has been living in Ecuador's embassy in the UK capital since June as he battles extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted over allegations he sexually assaulted two women.

Stone also blasted a string of upcoming films about Assange, including The Fifth Estate, which will star Benedict Cumberbatch as the Australian, as well as Alex Gibney's documentary, We Steal Secrets.

"One documentary coming out from Alex Gibney that is not expected to be kind," he tweeted.

"Another film from Dreamworks which is also going to be unfriendly... I don't think most people in the US realise how important Wikileaks is and why Julian's case needs support. Julian Assange did much for free speech and is now being victimised by the abusers of that concept."
