"Are online courses equal in value to traditional face-to-face courses? What about degrees earned virtually vs. those earned at a ground campus? The debate about the validity of elearning has been raging since the beginning of distance education decades ago in spite of studies showing that online courses may be of equal or even of more value."

Apple made a big splash in NYC in January when it announced an improved iTunes U application. Once simply a section of the iTunes store, Apple relaunched iTunes U as a dedicated app for iOS devices. As Phil Schiller, a senior vice president at Apple, explained, iTunes U courses enable “anyone anywhere at any time to take courses for free.” iTunes U expanded by adding new features to simplify course management. In doing so, Apple went head-to-head with existing learning management systems like Blackboard. Using the iTunes U software platform, K-12 and higher education instructors can manage entire courses; instructors can post class announcements, material in various formats, homework, and class information. At the time of the announcement, iTunes U already had 1000 universities using it and 700 million downloads. Following the announcement, many suggested that iTunes U would be the future of college education—the de facto platform that would give any student, anywhere, access to high quality education material. Considering all the hype about this great product, why is it that the country’s top universities have instead decided to take a different approach to online learning?

"One of the first things about the iPad that caught people’s attention was the touch screen, and it goes without saying that some of the first apps to start taking advantage of that touch screen were handwriting/note taking apps. Apps that let you write, draw, sketch—-and sometimes type–notes on your iPad. Something that combined technology with the age-old practice of scribbling notes on paper."

"Cell phones are a terrific tool to support student engagement and achievement in reading and writing. To follow are some ideas explaining how teachers are doing just that by using cell phones in the way they are most commonly used among youth -- for texting and group texting. We will also look at a newly emerging trend...using cell phones to write novels."

It has become clear that teaching skills requires answering “What should students learn in the 21st century?” on a deep and broad basis. Teachers need to have the time and flexibility to develop knowledge, skills, and character, while also considering the meta-layer/fourth dimension that includes learning how to learn, interdisciplinarity, and personalisation. Adapting to 21st century needs means revisiting each dimension and how they interact:
