Free Technology for Teachers: On YouTube You Can Now Find Free Music to Legally Download and Re-use

Free Technology for Teachers: On YouTube You Can Now Find Free Music to Legally Download and Re-use | The Eighth Floor | Scoop.it

"For the last couple of years Vimeo has offered free music to download and re-use in your video projects. Now YouTube is offering the same thing through the YouTube Audio Library. This library is slightly different than the free music available when you use the YouTube slideshow creation tool. The music in the YouTube Audio Library is music that you can download to use in projects online and offline. You can search the library of music according to genre, mood, instrument, or duration. You can listen to the tracks before downloading them as MP3 files."

Teach your kids (and yourself!) how to code with these iPad apps - MacWorld

Teach your kids (and yourself!) how to code with these iPad apps - MacWorld | The Eighth Floor | Scoop.it
Move over, Space Camp: Coding is quickly growing as a popular activity for kids, and not just for those who dream of being programmers when they grow up. The logical thinking required to code can help kids succeed in school and other day-to-day activities—it’s no wonder why big companies are getting behind the effort to help students learn the needed critical thinking skills.

If you want to help them get started, there are a number of visual, kid-friendly apps that teach users how to build games and code other simple activities on their own.

How to create and share an iCloud calendar on the iPad | iPad Insight

How to create and share an iCloud calendar on the iPad | iPad Insight | The Eighth Floor | Scoop.it
With iOS 8 Apple introduced Family Sharing. This feature might not be for everyone, as Thomas demonstrated for us in his early review back in October. However, for my family it has been an excellent way to track and approve my 12 year old son’s app purchase requests. In addition, we now have a calendar that was automatically created for our whole family to share. The Family Sharing Calendar isn’t our default calendar for keeping all of our important appointments and meetings in. Our personal calendars are ridiculously overloaded with information, so we choose to make use of seperate iCloud calendars for each member of the family for that purpose. However, if we have a special event, or quick change of plans that the whole family need to be aware of, the Family Calendar serves that purpose well.

If I were doing this project today I would have students do every step on the iPad using

1. Notes to brainstorm and write their 75 words

2. Word Cloud to paste in and create their cloud then design their layout

3. Superimpose to layer their images together, mask their photo, and save

I have a tutorial showing how to layer and mask images using the green screen app here.

The images can also be layered in the latest version of the Green Screen app by DoInk now that you can resize images.

Comprehensive List of Free e-Book Websites for your e-Reader

Comprehensive List of Free e-Book Websites for your e-Reader | The Eighth Floor | Scoop.it

If you own an e-reader you often can only buy e-books from the bookstore that is bundled on your device. Many of the budget e-readers out there don’t even have a bookstore that is accessible by users and many people are left to fend for themselves to load content on it.

Here is a comprehensive free e-book resource catalog online. All of these books are hardware agnostic, which means they are not locked by DRM (Digital Rights Management). All you have to do is simply download a title and load in via the USB cable from your computer to your e-reader. Many of these sites also provide the books in more than one format, so they will work with your Amazon Kindle, Kobo, Barnes and Noble Nook, Sony e-reader and hundreds of others.

How to Quit Multiple iPhone Apps Simultaneously in iOS with Multitouch - iMore | The Eighth Floor | Scoop.it

"If you ever need to quit out of more than one app on the iPhone, or quit a bunch of apps quickly in iOS, using a handy multitouch swipe gesture at the iOS multitasking screen is enough to quit apps simultaneously. This works really well to quickly clear out the multitask bar of all running apps if you need to for whatever reason, and you can quit as many apps at a time as that fit on screen (and that you can fit fingers onto), which usually means killing running apps in groups of three."
