EAP should, in principle, always be 'demand high'. Here Jim Scrivener talks about the Demand High 'meme' for ELT generally. I think it's a really useful 'crystaliser' of things we already do in the EAP classroom, but perhaps need to think about more. EAP classroom practice has, in my experience, inherited from EFL an over-reliance on the procedural delivery of materials. EAP, given its often high-stakes nature, cannot afford to be this. We need to get down and messy with our students' (mis)understandings of content, texts and language. Demand High ELT gives us, I think, some useful food for thought. While English Medium Instruction (EMI) in education systems has been the norm in former British colonies for many years, recent years have seen large growth in EMI in many other countries around the world. Universities from Italy to Indonesia, from Rwanda to Kazakhstan, rush to teach more and more courses in English medium, driven by the desire to recruit international students and to prepare home students for an international future. At school level EMI is popular not only in the traditional private sector, but is finding its way into public educational systems. What are the driving forces behind this? Is this trend inevitable in the long-term, and a good thing? When is EMI appropriate and how can it be made successful? Who are the winners and the losers, in terms of people and languages? Own-language use in ELT: exploring global practices and attitudes | Graham Hall & Guy Cook (2012)

This free-to-download ELT research report examines teachers' beliefs and practice surrounding learners' own-language use in the EFL classroom. Hall & Cook use the term 'own language' to distinguish from the slightly problematic 'L1' and 'mother tongue', which they see as inaccurately labelling the language that learners may draw on in preparing for and engaging in tasks in the EFL classroom. This is an increasingly talked-about area and this looks like a valuable contribution to the conversation.
