'T Woud Ensemble | The Dream Of A Shadow | Scoop.it
't Woud Ensemble
Jan Bergmans's insight:
'T WOUD ENSEMBLE SPEELT ZOMERGASTEN

Met: Lukas Dijkema, Ad van Kempen, Marian Mudder
Regie: Teuntje Klinkenberg

Het is vakantie. Niets moet, alles kan. Luieren zonder schuldgevoel.

Regisseur: Teuntje Klinkenberg
Bewerker Gorki en dramaturg: Mart-Jan Zegers
Producent: Jos van Hulst
Productie: Erma van Maris, Tim Hermsen, Clarinda Nottrot
Vormgeving: Marlies Schot

Publiciteit: Bureau tamtam/Lonneke van Eden
Zakelijke leiding: Bureau Barel

Speelperiode: 21 juni t/m 22 september 2013.
Première: 28 juni 2013, 20.30 uur, REURING festival in het Purmerbos, te Purmerend

Zomergasten is een voorstelling van ’t Woud Ensemble in samenwerking met Het Groninger Landschap, Landschap Noord-Holland,

Paul Bloom: The Case Against Empathy

Paul Bloom: The Case Against Empathy | The Dream Of A Shadow | Scoop.it
Empathy research is thriving these days. Several new books enthusiastically champion an increase in empathy as a cure for humanity’s ills. This enthusiasm may be misplaced, however.
Jan Bergmans's insight:

In 2008, Karina Encarnacion, an eight year-old girl from Missouri, wrote to President-elect Barack Obama with some advice about what kind of dog he should get for his daughters. She also suggested that he enforce recycling and ban unnecessary wars. Obama wrote to thank her, and offered some advice of his own: “If you don’t already know what it means, I want you to look up the word ‘empathy’ in the dictionary. I believe we don’t have enough empathy in our world today, and it is up to your generation to change that.”

This wasn’t the first time Obama had spoken up for empathy. Two years earlier, in a commencement address at Xavier University, he discussed the importance of being able “to see the world through the eyes of those who are different from us—the child who’s hungry, the steelworker who’s been laid off, the family who lost the entire life they built together when the storm came to town.” He went on, “When you think like this—when you choose to broaden your ambit of concern and empathize with the plight of others, whether they are close friends or distant strangers—it becomes harder not to act, harder not to help.”

The word “empathy”—a rendering of the German Einfühlung, “feeling into”—is only a century old, but people have been interested for a long time in the moral implications of feeling our way into the lives of others. In “The Theory of Moral Sentiments” (1759), Adam Smith observed that sensory experience alone could not spur us toward sympathetic engagement with others: “Though our brother is upon the rack, as long as we ourselves are at our ease, our senses will never inform us of what he suffers.” For Smith, what made us moral beings was the imaginative capacity to “place ourselves in his situation . . . and become in some measure the same person with him, and thence form some idea of his sensations, and even feel something which, though weaker in degree, is not altogether unlike them.”

In this sense, empathy is an instinctive mirroring of others’ experience—James Bond gets his testicles mashed in “Casino Royale,” and male moviegoers grimace and cross their legs. Smith talks of how “persons of delicate fibres” who notice a beggar’s sores and ulcers “are apt to feel an itching or uneasy sensation in the correspondent part of their own bodies.” There is now widespread support, in the social sciences, for what the psychologist C. Daniel Batson calls “the empathy-altruism hypothesis.” Batson has found that simply instructing his subjects to take another’s perspective made them more caring and more likely to help.

Empathy research is thriving these days, as cognitive neuroscience undergoes what some call an “affective revolution.” There is increasing focus on the emotions, especially those involved in moral thought and action. We’ve learned, for instance, that some of the same neural systems that are active when we are in pain become engaged when we observe the suffering of others. Other researchers are exploring how empathy emerges in chimpanzee and other primates, how it flowers in young children, and the sort of circumstances that trigger it.

from the issuecartoon banke-mail this

This interest isn’t just theoretical. If we can figure out how empathy works, we might be able to produce more of it. Some individuals staunch their empathy through the deliberate endorsement of political or religious ideologies that promote cruelty toward their adversaries, while others are deficient because of bad genes, abusive parenting, brutal experience, or the usual unhappy goulash of all of the above. At an extreme lie the one per cent or so of people who are clinically described as psychopaths. A standard checklist for the condition includes “callousness; lack of empathy”; many other distinguishing psychopathic traits, like lack of guilt and pathological lying, surely stem from this fundamental deficit. Some blame the empathy-deficient for much of the suffering in the world. In “The Science of Evil: On Empathy and the Origins of Cruelty” (Basic), Simon Baron-Cohen goes so far as to equate evil with “empathy erosion.”

In a thoughtful new book on bullying, “Sticks and Stones” (Random House), Emily Bazelon writes, “The scariest aspect of bullying is the utter lack of empathy”—a diagnosis that she applies not only to the bullies but also to those who do nothing to help the victims. Few of those involved in bullying, she cautions, will turn into full-blown psychopaths. Rather, the empathy gap is situational: bullies have come to see their victims as worthless; they have chosen to shut down their empathetic responses. But most will outgrow—and perhaps regret—their terrible behavior. “The key is to remember that almost everyone has the capacity for empathy and decency—and to tend that seed as best as we possibly can,” she maintains.

Jan Bergmans's insight:

Muddy Water Zen was formed to disseminate and propagate the Dharma, the teachings of Shakymuni Buddha, as recorded in the ancient scriptures, as interpreted and transmitted by the Ancestors, and as experienced personally. Zen Buddhism, with its emphasis on meditation, is a way of cultivating compassion and wisdom through radical acceptance of what is. Meditation becomes an awareness and mindfulness of all that is, moment-to-moment and an appreciation of life in all its manifestations.

Jan Bergmans's insight:

In the lead up to my journey I was so determined to travel alone.

Convinced the self-exploration I was longing for would only be achievable through solitude.

I have now been travelling alongside an amazingly inspiring and beautiful individual for 5 months.

Living practically out of one another’s pockets, solitude is far from how I would describe it.

In these 5 months I have learnt more about myself than I could have ever imagined.

Traveling with company I have learnt so much about others.

A crucial part of life, that’s necessity, is not to be undermined.

We live interdependently and therefore to understand yourself you must understand others.

Sharing all of my space with someone on an ongoing basis, prior to this trip, was foreign to me.

This change of environment has been the most truth-revealing mirror I have ever stared into.

To have all of my reactions to situations displayed blatantly in front of me, it is impossible to ignore.

I have chosen not to live in ignorance, and have seen my downfalls as they are, which has been the greatest step on my constant cycle of evolution.

Our reactions are what we always will have control of.

Our reactions are a result of our perspectives, our perspectives are a reflection of our mind frames and our state of mind is responsible for EVERYTHING we feel and experience.
Choosing to reintroduce myself to my soul has been the most beautiful and pure unity.

Jan Bergmans's insight:

This leaden distance, the zinc plate of the sea

You could travel on it

To the shores of Norway.

The blood halts its course

At the edge.

The water is icy.   The buildings

Bow low to the sea,

Overhang it, prostrate themselves.   Heroes,

Unrussian, protestant,

Long ago died here

For their faith, king and country.    The ruined castle,

Crumbling away,

Slides into the sea,   You hear

The hungry seagulls cry.   In the north

Winter days are soon over.   Stooping

Structures, like heroes of old,

Are frozen forever.   Spires

Probe the leaden sky.

Thousands

Of years they will stand here,

Unmoving.

The wind has dropped.   The houses

Have thrust their root into the ground. Absolute

Silence

Ms. Zondra Mae

Ms. Zondra Mae | The Dream Of A Shadow | Scoop.it
Jan Bergmans's insight:

Zondra Mae was born in Canandaigua, New York. As Zandra Williams on May 11. At a very young age she moved with her family of three brothers. two sisters and her mother to Brockton, MA. When she was fourteen years old, they moved to a small town in Wisconsin. That is where the writing bug caught her.
She never had the chance to finish High School. She was shoved into the world to take care of herself at the age of fifteen and half. Life had its ups and downs. She never forgot about her love of the written word and always dreamed of having her work, her passion out there for the world to see. At times feeling her dreams were lost to her.
Many years had passed. She had fallen in love and gave birth to a beautiful baby girl at the age of twenty-seven. He left. Now it was just her and her daughter against the world. Finding work or even keeping a job was extremely difficult. Her daughter turned four and the light bulb went off in her head. Write, you must write and she did. She had relearn everything all over again. She was willing to take on the challenge. She finally finished High School and went on to college.
Now her daughter is fourteen years old. Life hasn't changed much, it is still daunting and unforgiving. She still struggles to find a job, but the opportunity to write was greater. She started writing screenplays. For ten years she studied the art of writing for the movies. One screenplay scared the hell out of her. She didn't finish it then. In August 2012 she picked it up again. As she read it, she thought, "Wow, I wrote that!" She dove into it once again. Gaining help from a wonderful man who works in Hollywood as a producer. That's when the Novel "Waking Darkness" was born. The screenplay had given her so much, she had to write the Novel. Zondra has never done anything the right way or the conventional way. It is only right for her. She never followed the pack. For her to conform, would be going against her religion.

Jan Bergmans's insight:

This is the challenge, to let your view get this vast, to let your view get so vast that your identity disappears. Then you realize that there is no other, and there is nothing personal going on. Contrary to the way the ego will view such a realization, it is in reality the birth of true love, a love which is free of all boundaries and fear. To the ego such uncontaminated love is unbearable in its intimacy. When there are no clear separating boundaries and nothing to gain the ego becomes disinterested, angry, or frightened. In a love where there is no other, there is nowhere to hide, no one to control, and nothing to gain. It is the coming together of appearances in the beautiful dance of the Self called love.

A Prologue of Sorts

Though seemingly empty, space is filled with wonder and possibilities. It is filled with light waves from billions of stars that can live virtually forever, crossing the universe, forming an endless web of light intersecting light, giving an orientation for the infinitesimally small vessel that carries you. Dwelling within this web of light you are always aware of being somewhere, even here in the middle of nowhere.”

Self-awareness is the first component of emotional intelligence—which makes sense when one considers that the Delphic oracle gave the advice to “know thyself” thousands of years ago. Self-awareness means having a deep understanding of one’s emotions, strengths, weaknesses, needs, and drives.
