Jancis on the Douro

Jancis on the Douro | The Douro Index | Scoop.it
There are various landscapes that get under your skin. I've been on safari in southern Africa only once and for a very short time, but I defy anyone exposed to the haunting rawness of the terrain to be immune to its call. Among wine regions I'd nominate the Douro Valley in northern Portugal as

Port and the Douro's future

Port and the Douro's future | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

JANCIS ROBINSON MW: "My enthusiastic account of the recently declared 2011 vintage ports provoked very different responses from the two major players in the international port business. (I have yet, by the way, to taste any 2011 from Quinta do Noval and, like several posters on the port 2011 thread on our forum, look forward to hearing more about their declaration.)

Major Port Houses Declare 2011 Vintage | Wine Spectator

Major Port Houses Declare 2011 Vintage | Wine Spectator | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

The Douro Valley's top Port houses are declaring the 2011 vintage, making it the first generalized declaration for Vintage Port since the classic 2007 vintage. Even though 2011 was regarded as a difficult growing season in the Douro Valley, Port producers were smiling by the end of harvest. A rainy winter at the start of 2011 proved beneficial, providing deep water reserves for a long, dry spring and early summer. May and June, however, brought alarming hailstorms. “I was at the quinta during the hailstorms, and they brought tears to my eyes,” said António Agrellos, chief winemaker of Quinta do Noval. 2011 Vintage Ports declared by Symington Family Estates | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

The Symington family are very pleased and proud to announce our decision to declare 2011 Vintage Ports for seven of our brands:  Graham’s, Dow’s, Warre’s, Cockburn’s, Quinta do Vesuvio and Smith Woodhouse, as well as the Prats + Symington brand Quinta de Roriz.  In addition, the extraordinary conditions of 2011 have enabled us to once more make the limited edition Capela da Quinta do Vesuvio 2011 (previously made only in 2007), and Graham’s has produced the limited edition Graham’s The Stone Terraces Vintage Port for the first time.

Cockburn's: Quinta dos Canais

Cockburn's: Quinta dos Canais | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

The view across Cockburn's great Quinta dos Canais in the Douro valley. In the remote Upper Douro Valley, the magnificent 261 hectare (642 acre) Quinta dos Canais vineyard produces some of the Douro’s finest wines and has formed the mainstay of Cockburn’s Vintage Ports for nearly a century.

“Canais” is the Portuguese word for water channels. The quinta’s name derives from the unique system of granite water channels that were built in the 19th century to bring the water from the ‘Sibio’ waterfall, that cascades down the steep hillside on the western part of the estate, to the vineyard’s houses and orchards.

Graham's 1963: 'like an obsessed ex girlfriend' Neil Martin

Graham's 1963: 'like an obsessed ex girlfriend' Neil Martin | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

An outstanding 1963 Port scoring 96/100 Parker Points.

Neil Martin of Wine Advocate : "What a stunning 1963 vintage port this is. The bouquet draws you in, does not drag you in with its alcohol and reveals a fresh, well defined nose with a nutty edge, hints of cigar box and allspice.

The palate is beautifully balanced, understated on the entry but building all the time, flashes of eucalyptus leading towards a more extrovert, clove tinged finish that hangs around the palate like an obsessed ex-girlfriend. Gorgeous Grahams!" Tasted May 2009." Neil Martin, Wine Journal

W & J GRAHAM was founded in 1820 and has an impeccable reputation as one of the leading producers of premium Port wines"...

To Declare or not to Declare

To Declare or not to Declare | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

"Vintage Port is a fascinating example of a category which has gained a fanatical following amongst a relatively small constituency of wine connoisseurs, most of them based in Great Britain and latterly the USA. Berry Bros are lucky enough to be the largest single importer of Vintage Port into the UK, and to have a treasured stock of early London (BB&R) bottlings of celebrated vintages in the Family Reserves"...

Warre's Vintage Port

Warre's Vintage Port | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

Great Vintage Port wine and the Douro valley (the oldest formally demarcated wine region) are so often overshadowed by headline grabbing counterparts in Bordeaux, Burgundy & Champagne, yet this is truly one the world's greatest wines, a fact which holds true in the 21st century.

"Warre’s has been leading the Port trade since it was established as the first British Port House in 1670. A pioneer of a great tradition with over 300 years of history, Warre’s legacy is built on the superb quality of Warre’s Vintage Ports and on an unwavering commitment to quality and successful innovation"...

Symington Family Estates

Symington Family Estates | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

Symington Family Estates is a leviathan within the Port wine trade of the Douro valley: legendary marques, Warre's, Dow's and Graham's, the former production empire of Cockburn's, major interests in Madeira with Blandy's and winemaking partnership with Frenchman Bruno Prats, comprise an impressive fortified and still wine portfolio...
