Winechap visits the Douro | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

Infamously erudite, meticulously attired, vinously virulent and ever so well connected... London's Tom Harrow (of Winechap fame) is en route to the Douro valley in northern Portugal.

Fortified, fermented and foot trodden, Tom will distil his own impressions of the world's greatest man enhanced landscape... step aside Joseph James Forrester, here comes the new 'Red Baron'....

I just know you all adron your ladies maid in your best diamonds while she serves you, so why not dress your Winechap in the color of your favorite Touriga National or Burgundy while he pours.

Mary H Goudie's comment, September 3, 2013 8:47 AM
Tom if you have a chance make it down to Portugal's capital Lisbon & I will show you the inside of our wine bottles. Don't forget to bring the dapper suit handsome.

David Eley Douro Map Shortlisted for Roederer Award

David Eley Douro Map Shortlisted for Roederer Award | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

"The Louis Roederer International Wine Writers’ Awards 2013 Shortlist Announced". The New illustrated Map of the Douro by artist and writer David Eley has been shortlisted in the category 'The Artistry of Wine' 2013

The awards ceremony will take place at The Royal Academy of Arts on the 10th September 2013.

On Wednesday 10th July the Roederer Awards Judging Panel met at the Maisons Marques et Domaines headquarters in London to discuss in detail their scores for the entries in the Louis Roederer International Wine Writers’ Awards 2013. Despite a series of computer crashes, late nights and weekends spent marking to ensure all the scores were ready on time, the panel were alert and sharp-witted and spent a number of hours engaged in good-humoured debate as to whose submissions were worthy of making it onto the prestigious shortlist for 2013. Charles Metcalfe, Chairman of the Judges, concluded that ‘we had more entries this year than ever before and the sheer quality of the entries in several categories made for lively debate before we decided on the winners.’

The effort put in by such a distinguished panel of judges mirrors the quality of some of the submissions and there was a remarkable degree of unanimity in the scoring, although picking the overall winners was a lengthier task. However, by lunchtime, the shortlist was agreed upon and the judges were rewarded with a glass of Louis Roederer Cristal 2005 followed by a delicious lunch at Chez Bruce which was complemented by the wines from our 2013 category sponsors Domaines Ott, Ramos Pinto, Domaine Faiveley and Meerlust Estate.

'Portugal Street' revisited in 2013

'Portugal Street' revisited in 2013 | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

SCROLL DOWN TO READ TEXT AND SEE ALL IMAGES:

Until the 17th century the upper end of Piccadilly in London was known as Portugal Street in honour of Catherine of Braganza, the Portuguese Queen Consort of Charles II but by 1743 became known as Piccadilly.

Therefore, it is quite fitting the Douro Map should be launched in St James's no more than a stone's throw from this very location.... albeit in the distinguished portals of the Dukes Hotel made famous by Ian Fleming and his James Bond Martinis... and across St James's Street at Christie's famous King Street auction rooms...

Nuno Mendes is Numero Uno at the Chiltern Firehouse

Nuno Mendes is Numero Uno at the Chiltern Firehouse | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

Star Portuguese Chef Nuno Mendes is now in charge of fine dining at London's latest hip hotel in the heart of Marylebone, the Chiltern Firehouse: "An American twist at André Balazs’s new Marylebone venture....Pedigrees abound at the much-anticipated Chiltern Firehouse. The hotel itself is André Balazs’s first London venture, joining a gloriously chic family that includes LA’s Chateau Marmont, New York’s The Mercer and The Standard Hollywood. The cuisine, meanwhile, is the province of Portuguese chef Nuno Mendes, who spent 16 years in the US training under such lauded chefs as Wolfgang Puck and Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and who leaves his Michelin-starred restaurant Viajante in Bethnal Green to produce American-influenced dishes for foodies and film stars.

Ai Weiwei and the Douro Map

Ai Weiwei and the Douro Map | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

"One of the best Dad’s Army wheezes of the British home guard in the phoney war which later went postal, was to jumble up the sign posts on country lanes in England so that when the panzers rolled up the road to London, they’d end up in Middle Wallop. SA vinous terroir is very Mom’s Army with style sign posts jumbled up and confusion the result. SA wine needs a map.

The Douro, first formally demarcated wine appellation in the world, showed the way when Baron Joseph James Forrester produced one in the 1830s.

A cartographic enterprise which has been brought into the 21st century by David Eley whose Douro Map (above)) will be auctioned at Christie’s in London in June, along with a vertical tasting of 12 vintages of Quinta do Noval from 1937 to 2003"...

Port becomes suddenly hip

Port becomes suddenly hip | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

"Winston Churchill, greatest Englishman of the last millennium (even if mum was American) has been in the news a lot this month in the run-up to and aftermath of, the pomp and circumstance funeral of another UK PM Margaret Thatcher. Winnie has popped up looking mightily pissed off on the new £5 note (and judging by the state of the UK economy, he has reason to be glum) while his eponymous Port is served at London’s trendiest restaurant called Dabbous, whose eponymous chef Olivier also looks distinctly Churchillian in Phil Fisk’s pic in the Observer Food Monthly"

To Declare or not to Declare

To Declare or not to Declare | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

"Vintage Port is a fascinating example of a category which has gained a fanatical following amongst a relatively small constituency of wine connoisseurs, most of them based in Great Britain and latterly the USA. Berry Bros are lucky enough to be the largest single importer of Vintage Port into the UK, and to have a treasured stock of early London (BB&R) bottlings of celebrated vintages in the Family Reserves"...
