Jancis on the Douro

Jancis on the Douro | The Douro Index | Scoop.it
There are various landscapes that get under your skin. I've been on safari in southern Africa only once and for a very short time, but I defy anyone exposed to the haunting rawness of the terrain to be immune to its call. Among wine regions I'd nominate the Douro Valley in northern Portugal as

I just know you all adron your ladies maid in your best diamonds while she serves you, so why not dress your Winechap in the color of your favorite Touriga National or Burgundy while he pours.

Mary H Goudie's comment, September 3, 2013 8:47 AM
Tom if you have a chance make it down to Portugal's capital Lisbon & I will show you the inside of our wine bottles. Don't forget to bring the dapper suit handsome.

Will Lyons on Portugal's Vinho Verde

Will Lyons on Portugal's Vinho Verde | The Douro Index | Scoop.it
Portugal's Vinho Verde is the ultimate hot-weather wine. But it's no pushover, Will Lyons explains. THE THERMOMETER in our garden tipped 33°C the other night, which is about as hot as it gets in London. After six pretty poor summers, it seems a heat wave is now sweeping across these islands, giving us temperatures to rival Southern Europe's more sun-baked cities.

A recent visit by Winechap (Tom Harrow) to the Douro valley in northern Portugal, was hosted by Vintage Wine Travel and crowned by a really wonderful dinner in the company of distinguished winemaker Manuel Lobo and proprietor Tomás Roquette of Quinta do Crasto. Not only did wild Partridge in Port wine perfectly punctuate a fabulous menu, but an array of great Crasto vintages culminated with two of Portugal's greatest red wines, Crasto's Vinha da Ponte and Maria Teresa... as the image shows, Tom Harrow was spoilt for choice when confonted with an array of fine vintage wines back to the nineties... a memorable way to conclude a truly original Douro visit !

Christian Seely Declares After A Spectacular 2011 Noval Innings..

Christian Seely Declares After A Spectacular 2011 Noval Innings.. | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

I am in the Douro right now, where the weather is fine and sunny and spirits are high. On Monday, the Institute of Masters of Wine organised a fantastic tasting in London of all the declared 2011 Vintage Ports, which confirmed that we have a great Vintage on our hands.

At Noval, we have declared the Quinta do Noval Vintage 2011, and also, for the first time since the 2003, the Quinta do Noval Vintage Nacional, which is of course a thrilling event. At Romaneira, we have also declared Quinta da Romaneira Vintage 2011.

I was here a couple of weeks ago finalising the blends with António Agrellos, and we took some pictures in the tasting room. As they show, we were feeling rather cheerful about the wines. It is always a great moment when you know that you have an outstanding Port wine that you can declare as a Vintage Port, and at Noval it is a rare and exciting event to be able to declare the Nacional as well. There have been a few blog posts about the Nacional over the past few months, following the big tasting we did in New York, and I also wrote a while ago about the tasting of the Nacional 94 with the Wine Spectator, also in New York. image © AXA Millesimes
