Noval Nacional 2011 Declaration

Noval Nacional 2011 Declaration | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

Wine writer James Suckling suggests the newly declared Quinta do Noval Vintage Nacional 2011 might well be the finest Vintage Port since the legendary 1963... praise indeed for one of the greatest wines in the world... "This is a significant event in Quinta do Noval history: last week, Quinta do Noval declared not only its Vintage 2011 but also its Vintage Nacional 2011, one of the world’s"...

Ai Weiwei and the Douro Map

Ai Weiwei and the Douro Map | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

"One of the best Dad’s Army wheezes of the British home guard in the phoney war which later went postal, was to jumble up the sign posts on country lanes in England so that when the panzers rolled up the road to London, they’d end up in Middle Wallop. SA vinous terroir is very Mom’s Army with style sign posts jumbled up and confusion the result. SA wine needs a map.

The Douro, first formally demarcated wine appellation in the world, showed the way when Baron Joseph James Forrester produced one in the 1830s.

A cartographic enterprise which has been brought into the 21st century by David Eley whose Douro Map (above)) will be auctioned at Christie’s in London in June, along with a vertical tasting of 12 vintages of Quinta do Noval from 1937 to 2003"...

Farr Vintners - 2011 Vintage Port - An Extraordinary Vintage

Farr Vintners - 2011 Vintage Port - An Extraordinary Vintage | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

1955 Dow is amazing tonight. 2011 will be the same....2011 Warre rocks!...buy 2011 VP" James Suckling on Twitter (15/05/13)

"I have never been as excited by the launch of a clutch of vintage ports. The quality of the best examples, of which there are many, is outstanding."

Jancis Robinson MW, Financial Times (03/05/13)

“I think back to the young vintages I tasted over my more than 30 years as a wine critic and the book I wrote in 1989 called "Vintage Port." The 2011 vintage makes me think of some of the great classics such as 1966 to 1977. Some of the wines below have the green, stemmy edge in flavor with polished yet chewy tannins that great Port blenders always looked for in legendary years such as 1947 and 1927. I can't wait to taste more 2011 in few weeks.” James Suckling (28/04/13)

Port and the Douro's future

Port and the Douro's future | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

JANCIS ROBINSON MW: "My enthusiastic account of the recently declared 2011 vintage ports provoked very different responses from the two major players in the international port business. (I have yet, by the way, to taste any 2011 from Quinta do Noval and, like several posters on the port 2011 thread on our forum, look forward to hearing more about their declaration.)

Vintage Port deserves more marketing

Vintage Port deserves more marketing | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

"The declaration of a vintage Port needs greater fanfare thinks Matt Douglas, managing director of Stevens Garnier. Speaking of the recently declared 2011 vintage, Douglas (who distributes Sogrape’s Ports such as Sandeman) explained that it was the first time that all of the Port houses had really supported the declaration with tastings and some marketing"...

Major Port Houses Declare 2011 Vintage | Wine Spectator

Major Port Houses Declare 2011 Vintage | Wine Spectator | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

The Douro Valley's top Port houses are declaring the 2011 vintage, making it the first generalized declaration for Vintage Port since the classic 2007 vintage. Even though 2011 was regarded as a difficult growing season in the Douro Valley, Port producers were smiling by the end of harvest. A rainy winter at the start of 2011 proved beneficial, providing deep water reserves for a long, dry spring and early summer. May and June, however, brought alarming hailstorms. “I was at the quinta during the hailstorms, and they brought tears to my eyes,” said António Agrellos, chief winemaker of Quinta do Noval. Christian Seely Declares After A Spectacular 2011 Noval Innings..

Christian Seely Declares After A Spectacular 2011 Noval Innings.. | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

I am in the Douro right now, where the weather is fine and sunny and spirits are high. On Monday, the Institute of Masters of Wine organised a fantastic tasting in London of all the declared 2011 Vintage Ports, which confirmed that we have a great Vintage on our hands.

At Noval, we have declared the Quinta do Noval Vintage 2011, and also, for the first time since the 2003, the Quinta do Noval Vintage Nacional, which is of course a thrilling event. At Romaneira, we have also declared Quinta da Romaneira Vintage 2011.

I was here a couple of weeks ago finalising the blends with António Agrellos, and we took some pictures in the tasting room. As they show, we were feeling rather cheerful about the wines. It is always a great moment when you know that you have an outstanding Port wine that you can declare as a Vintage Port, and at Noval it is a rare and exciting event to be able to declare the Nacional as well. There have been a few blog posts about the Nacional over the past few months, following the big tasting we did in New York, and I also wrote a while ago about the tasting of the Nacional 94 with the Wine Spectator, also in New York. image © AXA Millesimes

Fladgate joins 2011 declaration surge

Fladgate joins 2011 declaration surge | The Douro Index | Scoop.it

The Fladgate Partnership has joined other major houses in declaring its 2011 vintage Ports, having held off until its traditional timing of St George’s day.

All three houses within Fladgate’s portfolio – Croft, Fonseca and Taylor’s will release a 2011 vintage, as the company’s managing director Adrian Bridge hailed “textbook” styles that are “classics in every sense.”

In common with Sogrape, Symington and Churchill’s, each of whom have made declarations within the last month, Fladgate’s head winemaker David Guimaraens was emphatic in his praise of this vintage.

“The 2011s stand out for the purity of the fruit and the quality of the tannins, which are silky and well integrated but provide plenty of structure,” he summarised.
