Unions: Wal-Mart had role in NY minimum wage deal
Wall Street Journal
ALBANY, N.Y. — Several labor unions say more than $400,000 in contributions by Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
Jacob Kuwahara's insight:

It comes as no surprise to me that Walmart supported this bill when they will get $20-40 million a year for three years with no cap on payments. This was a "cost-effective" decision. Only when it benefits Walmart will they push to benefit their employees.

Walmart Accused Of Violating Disabilities Act
Disability Scoop
Federal regulators are suing Walmart for allegedly looking the other way while an employee with developmental disabilities was sexually harassed by a co-worker for years.
Jacob Kuwahara's insight:

We had an associate at our store that had multiple sexual harrassment compaints lodged against him. From both associates and customers. The female workers were afraid to be around him. He was eventually fired because he stole from the vending machine in the break room. Walmart cares more about their vending machines than they do their associates' safety and well being.

A Close-up Look at Wal-Mart’s Scary Anti-Union Tactics - Democratic Underground

A Close-up Look at Wal-Mart’s Scary Anti-Union Tactics
Jacob Kuwahara's insight:

In my training when I was first hired I was told that "Walmart is not Anti-Union, we're pro associate".  When our local Albertson's closed down my store jumped on the opportunity to have a powerpoint play outside of the Managers' office that told of the horrors of unions.

The powerpoint was in essence as follows :Abertson's employee's were due paying union members and look at what happened to them. Oh, and the pro union protests at the last Share-Holders' meeting? Yeah, those people were paid by a company that wants you to join their Walmart union. Just to let ya know.

Jacob Kuwahara's insight:

This is all and well, but they should also look to shipping and receiving as well. I can open a box that could feasibly hold two Xbox 360's and find one or two movies floating around in it instead. That's not very green if you ask me.

Walmart might have viewed their plans to open in an existing building in Los Angeles Chinatown as a bullet-proof strategy.
Jacob Kuwahara's insight:

I make more than the "average associate of $8.89" But like Martha Sellers, I find it difficult to pay all of my bills. We may make more than minimum wage, but we also have to have the hours to back up that pay. $9.90 is nice, but when you only work 48 hours a pay period, it doesn't add up to 8.80 for 80 hours.

Mike Duke had also made a promise to part time employees in a statement saying that our hours were going to be increased. After that statement hundreds of stores slashed hours across the board

There is so much that I agree with in Mr. Nader's letter. He mentions that many of Walmart employees have to receive government assistance to subsidize their low wages. That is very much true for me, and many of my fellow associates. He said that the Walmart worker of today is doing twice as much as a worker from 1968. That I fully agree with as well. On any given day I can cover Photo, Electronics, Connection Center, Pets, Fabrics, Toys, Sporting Goods, Pick Up Today, Site To Store, Layaway, and Dock To Stock (which is checking in high ticket merchandise off the truck) all by myself, AND I'm expected to have all of those departments immaculately clean.

"they really don’t care how many lives go to make these clothes.” - Kalpona Atker
As part of The Walmart "Family" and how I'm treated as a member of that family, it comes as no surprise to me that Walmart refuses to compensate the families of the victims, especially given that they aren't even from the Western Hemisphere.
