The View From the Shelves...: Choosing to Use Technology

The View From the Shelves...: Choosing to Use Technology | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
GwynethJones's insight:

The sentence "For many of our students, school is the only place where opportunities to work with technology occurs." is very significant.

It seems that in all the folderol with the flashy education trends and hot topics, flipping, making, genrefying, etc. (And don't get me wrong, I'm a fan!) When it boils down to it, the digital divide still exists in this country. It's not the tool, it's the skill. It's not the iPad or device, its the application - of thought, of ideas, of skills.

Thank you for reminding us all that our kiddos NEED us to give them these experiences, these skills, and exposure to new technologies.

And librarians are the BEST educators in the building be both a technology and learning leader.

Cheers!

5 Tips for Creating DonorsChoose Projects

5 Tips for Creating DonorsChoose Projects | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
I was first introduced to DonorsChoose a few years ago when they had the promotion with Starbucks where gift cards were given out to patrons to spend on projects.  I had several successful projects...
GwynethJones's insight:

I haven't done one of these. I'm probably like the last one!

But I'm intrigued after I helped fund Jennifer LaGarde's 3D printer last summer!

I used to have 18 Apple computers in my school library - Like almost an Apple history! In 1997 we had PowerMacs 5200's, then blueberry iMacs, then eMacs - now I only have 4 left....and they're my PACs!

I really would like at least 4 iMac desktops to do iMovie editing, video production, and graphic design. I know that's not considered cool anymore w/ the Makey Makey movement but dag, it's what I want.

I asked my Supervisor last week if I had any chance in the future to get 4 desktops and she was like ....nope. [sad face]

What do you think? It's too much $$ for donor's choose, right?

Retire Already!

Retire Already! | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
Hey, you older, tenured profs, you’re being greedy and selfish, and your students would be better off if you left.
GwynethJones's insight:

Are professors and teachers getting too old?

Why do we hold on so long?

Is it because ....according to Dave Hickey:

"The problem with teaching is that it offers an ongoing sense of redemption. In the real world, which you have now re-entered, if you muck up, there are consequences. In the university, you get a new semester to pretend nothing bad ever happened."
