The importance of school libraries in the Google Age | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
We continue to hear about the lack of trained library staff in schools, despite ongoing research indicating that the presences of teacher librarians lead to improved learning outcomes and NAPLAN Reading Literacy results. Kay Oddone highlights the many benefits teacher librarians bring to their schools, and why their role is integral to both student and staff learning.

7 Strategies to Teach Students Text Comprehension

7 Strategies to Teach Students Text Comprehension | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it

Comprehension strategies are sets of steps that good readers use to make sense of text. Comprehension strategy instruction helps students become purposeful, active readers who are in control of their own reading comprehension. The seven strategies here appear to have a firm scientific basis for improving text comprehension.

These 5 awesome wins by educator-activists will benefit students & democracy - Education Votes | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
Policy wins across the country mean better conditions for students and educators.
GwynethJones's insight:

This is SO exciting!

We've also had Happy News in Howard County, Maryland!

2 years ago, our Library Media Assistants were cut and placed in different departments - because they were considered a "luxury."

This spring, we got a new AWESOME superintendent, Michael J. Martirano @mjmsuper & he reinstated them!

W00t! I won't believe it 100% until I see her dear face back in August, but I am so chuffed! Prayer really works!

Other good news in Maryland! We passed a 2% cap on Testing!

"Maryland State Education Association President Betty Weller called it “a huge step in rolling back the disruptive and counterproductive over-testing culture in our schools. By eliminating more than 700 hours of unnecessary district-mandated testing across the state, our kids will get back days — and in some cases weeks — of instruction time to learn well-rounded skills and gain valuable problem solving ability.”

Students Say They Are Not as Tech Savvy as Educators Assume - EdSurge News

Students Say They Are Not as Tech Savvy as Educators Assume - EdSurge News | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it

"A love for avocado lattes and Snapchat filters are just a few of the stereotypes following Millennials these days. But students are now pushing back on these generational generalizations, noting that assumptions regarding their attitudes, hobbies, and abilities are hurting them academically. One of the biggest misconceptions students at last week’s New Media Consortium’s Summer Conference (NMC) brought up was the idea that millennials are digital natives.

"Most people have heard this story before: the eight-year-old son teaching his forty-year-old dad how to use some new device or app. However, despite being an allegory of our times, a lot has been said off-the-record about misconceptions regarding students’ technological abilities. In an interview with EdSurge, Alexandra Pickett, the Director of New York State University’s Center for Online Teaching Excellence, noted that many of her students know how to use online platforms such as Twitter and Facebook for fun, but have no idea how to leverage them for academic and professional use. It’s a point the students at NMC echoed."

What we use digital tools for in our daily lives is not what we use them for in classrooms. Neil Selwyn's and Larry Cuban's research have shown that digital tools used poorly do not improve teaching and learning
Chris Carter's curator insight, July 25, 7:17 PM
So true. Born into a digital world, we assume kids know how to navigate it. But really, did you know how to navigate your world when you grew up? Most kids are digital "naives" rather than digital natives, knowing just enough to do what they want to do. When I chaired a student-centered panel at EduTECH Asia in Singapore, the kids said the same thing. We should not unnecessarily put students in a box that assumes they know how to use the tools, to full effect, that the digital world provides.

John Dalziel's curator insight, July 11, 4:55 AM
There's a high probability that readers of this post use Wikipedia but, if they are Education Practitioners, will tell their Learners not to!
That's the reason for this post!
Wikipedia has long been the bane of most educators – resulting in the...
"don’t believe everything you read on the internet because anyone can publish anything" movement.
While Wikipedia provides subject matter for teaching...
  - credibility,
  - authority,
  - source citations,
...and more
The idea of actually using Wikipedia to explicitly teach research is less common. This is where Wikipedia "Tools and Resources" for instructors comes in.
Over the last 7 years, the Wikipedia Education Program in the United States and Canada, have collected user experiences and feedback to put together some guidelines and training for practitioners and their learners.
Guidelines include...
  - Resources for instructors
  - Getting students ready
  - Subject-specific handouts
  - Classroom handouts and
  - Designing assignments
This is just a taste of what's on offer.

Teaching Visual Art and Computational Thinking - Hack the Classroom - Michelle Cordy @cordym

Teaching Visual Art and Computational Thinking - Hack the Classroom - Michelle Cordy @cordym | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
This blog post includes a 5 minute video, a lesson plan and examples of student that show integration of visual art curriculum and Computational Thinking in my grade 3 classroom.

Thank you to Bea Leiderman, Carolyn Skibba, Douglas Kian and my experience at the Apple Institute in Berlin for this idea.  Using Keynote and Kandinsky is Bea’s idea. It’s brilliant. Bea, Carolyn and I went to the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin where we saw Kandinsky’s work. We also had in depth workshops on Keynote. The combination of these experiences at the Apple Institute in Berlin lead to this idea and a project. Bea, Douglas and I are currently working on a project where we are investigating how these ideas of art, coding, and Computational Thinking might fit together. This is the early stage of this team project.

This video gives an overview of the lesson and a chance to peak inside my grade 3 classroom:
