GwynethJones's insight:

My article for the Back to School Issue for @NEAToday Magazine - They didn't use my title or my graphic, but it's a good article! ;-)

Should I be upset or disappointed they don't use the graphics I create for the articles I write? Am I too fussy? I have graphic design desires & passionate feels!  I guess I'll just re-post to my blog and use the graphics I created. So there ! LOL

Srsly though, it's an honor to write for the organization that has had my back for the last 25 years - if you're a teacher and you're not part of union, you're taking a big chance!

The Difference Between Empathy And Sympathy - TeachThought

The Difference Between Empathy And Sympathy - TeachThought | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
What’s the difference between empathy and sympathy? There is one, and it’s pretty important.

In brief, empathy is feeling with or alongside someone, while sympathy is feeling sorry for, which Brene Brown, research  professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, explores in the video above. Brown reduces the difference between empathy and sympathy as the difference between feeling with and feeling for, calling empathy a ‘sacred space’ and a ‘choice.’

GwynethJones's insight:

I've always thought I was pretty good about not talking personal stuff at work but I've messed up before!  We had a principal once who discouraged it, and that was always fine with me!

I think it's more professional to not share the personal and never the private. But occasionally, I'll get lulled into feeling comfortable and share something I probably shouldn't. Nothing inappropriate mind, (thank goodness my life is boring and vanilla) but maybe too much to share at work. Resist this!

Also, talking snarky about the incompetent and negative people in your school is not good form. Everyone knows who they are already, you don't need to be the one to point it out - it just makes you look bad.

How Engineering Class in 9th Grade Can Excite Diverse Learners | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
Engineering has been getting a lot of attention because of its real-world applications and clear job prospects, but learning to think like an engineer could be useful no matter what students decide to pursue for work. At Science Leadership Academy, a public magnet school in Philadelphia, all ninth-graders take a one-semester introduction-to-engineering course to help them learn how to tackle big projects. That’s a skill they will need in every high school class going forward at this project-based, inquiry-centered school.
