Sadly, I had to miss ISTE this year because I was called up for a MONTH LONG US District Court Jury Duty and wasn't allowed to leave the state of Maryland (except for the beach) for the whole flippin month! What a bummer!I'm sure it was because of a certain trial in the State of Maryland that got a lot of national attention.

SO makes me cringe - like the "participation awards" Are we training our kiddos to have "grit" to keep trying until they get it or are we training them to be entitled humans who expect to "win" right away and get constantly lauded at every step? Kids themselves, when gaming, will keep trying until they 'level up" why don't we have confidence in them to translate that kind of persistence in academics?
And not to open another can of worms, BUT [gets out her can opener and rips into the can-o-worms with gusto] I also have problems with the term "Genius Hour" being used with abandon in education and schools of late. As a proponent of gifted education and gifted kiddos, overuse of the word genius is just right out.

Vizia is a free tool for creating video-based quizzes. On Vizia you an import a video from YouTube or from Wistia and then add questions along the timeline of the video. You can ask multiple choice questions as well as short answer/ open-response questions. Adding a poll question into the video is also a possibility in Vizia. All of the responses to your questions are collected in a spreadsheet that you can download and or open in Google Sheets.
Google’s search engine is an always-expanding, extremely useful tool that’s packed with tons of different tools. Over on Zapier, they outline tons of different advanced tricks for searching Google as quickly as possible.

The problem with Genius Hour - Genius Hour can free schools up to devote the many other hours of the day to learning that is ineffective and disengaging.

ANYWAY-----I have a problem with the term "Genius Hour" itself. I LOVE the idea for open time for student-led deep inquiry - it's the just term I dislike. It's a glib throwaway that doesn't honor Gifted Education or Gifted Kids.
