Lovelace– The Origin

Lovelace– The Origin | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it

GwynethJones's insight:

A Steampunk Cycle of Inspiration - All Brass Cogs and Some Virtual Steam

I love my Acorn Media streaming account! Why?  Because it brings me the BEST British documentaries. I'm kinda obsessed with them. I watch...a LOT. But .one of my recent favorites is Calculating Ada presented by fellow ginger the imminently engaging Maths Prof Hannah Fry @FryRsquared   who, according to her Twitter profile is "All math and no trousers."

She briefly interviews the graphic novel artist @sydneypadua

which led me here!  Now I'm going to buy her hardback book for the Coastal Cottage. I imagine it inspiring a budding Mathematician or Scientist or Steampunk!

Which leads me to remember the joy and wonderment of my Second Life in the Steampunk city of New Babbage - where I lived for years on Wheatstone Waterways and once had a tophat that featured Ada's picture in a pocket watch locket.  That steampunk world introduced me to her some 9 years ago.

I really don't know where I'm going with this strange recollection - except it's interesting that a cycle of inspiration fueled by the virtual steam of Second Life brought me to really admire the historical significance of Ada Lovelace - daughter of Lord Byron and who published the first Computer Program in 1842.

I wish this book was appropriate for Middle Schoolers - I guess I must buy the book, read, review, and get it approved for my school district if I can! I'm even thinking this could probably make a really good blog post. Funny, how things go that way. I find myself writing a really long comment on a blog, or an entry for this Scoop - inspired by a documentary, leading me to a book and a website - and now to a blog post so I can share it with you - dear reader. Kinda weird and cool, huh?

I think I shall go do that now....but maybe I should go to sleep first- it's 3am.

The Five Biggest Fears that Kept Me from Empowering Students

The Five Biggest Fears that Kept Me from Empowering Students | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it

7 Ways #Reflection Gives #Students #Ownership of their Learning

7 Ways #Reflection Gives #Students #Ownership of their Learning | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
It wasn’t until I actively started to reflect, both by myself in writing each and every day, and also with my wife at the end of the day, that I could open up my world to new possibilities. Reflecting helped me recognize where I was currently at (in my job, in blogging, in being a dad and husband) versus where I wanted to be.

If we don’t reflect, we tend to go through the motions, not conscious of what steps we can take to get better or move forward.

The same goes for students. When students are allowed, given time, supported, and praised for their reflection, something changes. They begin to own their experience, instead of being forced into a series of choices they aren’t sure about.

I'm reflecting on reflecting. Note taking, goal tasking, and introspection I think is a great skill to teach our kiddos!

Putting Math and Science Back into STEM Projects @ajjuliani

Putting Math and Science Back into STEM Projects @ajjuliani  | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
Many teachers have done the spaghetti and marshmallow challenge in the classroom and called it a STEM project. It’s a great activity, but is it really a STEM activity? Sure there’s an engineering aspect to it, but what about the other components? Looking back, these types of activities are what we refer to as surface-level STEM activities.

Via John Evans
GwynethJones's insight:

FULL STEAM AHEAD! End your school year with fun projects now! OR....get a great start for next year!

Sample Student's curator insight, May 21, 5:48 PM
As the introduction states, STEM is integrated, it is not and either/or approach to learning. It overcomes the silo effect, in which we impose artificial barriers between each of the sciences and resist any areas of overlap.
This approach means that students' learning is authentic, genuine problems do not recognise boundaries, and a truly wicked problem requires a holistic approach to its solution.

caitlin braddick's curator insight, May 29, 6:03 AM

The Birdman STEM Project challenges students to explore Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution and design a specialised bird beak that must overcome the challenges of the natural environment. A blog at STEMstudents.net allows students to share their products and outcomes.

The SAMR Model and higher order thinking skills are addressed in these project ideas by enhancing the real-world application of the activities through engineering tools, needing to be responsive to their environment. The Birdman STEM Project is a tactile/physical project that can be produced using 3D image building technology. The beak of the Birdman must respond and evolve to the simulated environment. This project is dynamic and deeper level requiring deeper student research, immersion and understanding
