Thee concept and nature of leadership has probably never been more debated than it is now. Last year saw Theresa May take over as PM in the UK after David Cameron stepped down, while the US elected a new President  - where his opponent criticised him for having no prior political experience.
 
The debate around leadership looks set to continue. Trump’s inauguration dominates headlines, Northern Ireland’s deputy first minister has resigned, meaning an assembly election is inevitable, and the French Presidential elections are set for May.

These political upheavals have repercussions across the world of business. Redrawing the next 12 months and beyond will present uncertain and potentially challenging times, but businesses who are themselves able to ensure they have trustworthy, capable and confident leaders in place will be able to navigate this uncertainty and even thrive.

To be a leader does not mean wearing the title of "leader." It's not something you choose to be one minute and then choose not to be the next. A leader is not a leader simply because he or she has been promoted. And a leader is not someone who sits in a position of management.

The first thing that must be understood is that motivation is an art, rather than a science. There is no magic formula that can be waved over an employee or team that will magically transform them into motivated, driven and hard working superstars. Rather a motivation strategy must be curated, like a fine dining experience, with each interaction complimenting the last, building to a crescendo and leaving a profound and sustaining impression. It, unlike incentives, cannot be turned on and off like a faucet – but has to flow constantly, building cumulatively and being ever present.

88 percent of employees who participated in the 2016 SHRM Employee Job Satisfaction and Engagement Survey, indicated that they were satisfied with their current job. This marks the highest level of satisfaction over the past ten years.


Although there are many reasons that contributed to this statistic, "respectful treatment of employees at all levels" was at the top of the list for the second year in a row. It even beat out major players like pay, benefits and job security. (Did anyone else start singing a little Aretha Franklin?)

Other-centered  > When we’re empathic we care about how other people are. Exceptional leaders ask others how they are doing, what they need, and what they feel. This increases bonding, honesty and connection. When we have a clear idea of how others feel about what they’re doing, we can better support and guide them. When others trust that we support them, they realize they’re not alone and without help. We must keep in mind that if we want others to be invested in what we’re doing, and to respond with cooperation to what we’re asking, then we must consider their ideas and also how they perceive who we are. To be great, we must use empathy to guide all aspects of our lives, allowing it to influence not only what we say, but also allowing it to influence how we say what we say, and allow it to direct the kinds of questions we need to ask. When these steps are taken, it naturally inspires the development of empathy within others.

Understand leadership is not about you. It’s about others. The leader may hold power and authority, but those things come with obligations. Leadership is ultimately an act of service. It’s impossible to treat it otherwise and achieve greatness. With great power comes great responsibility—not only to yourself but also to those you lead. As a leader, you must always be willing to show accountability and to respect and serve others. The true source of power is not titles or bank accounts but service and responsibility.
