Verily, formerly Google's life sciences arm, is launching today a four-year study called Project Baseline to find out why people transition from being generally healthy to getting sick.The Silicon Valley-based company is working with its partners, Duke University and Stanford Medicine, to enroll 10,000 participants from diverse backgrounds at half a dozen study sites in California and North Carolina.The researchers are recruiting some people in good health, and others who are at high risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease, and outfitting them with sophisticated health trackers and sequencing their genomes, among other things.

The mid-life crisis is real: People in their 40s are officially more depressed

Researchers say there is strong evidence that life satisfaction hits a low point in our early 40s.
JettRay's insight:

Some researchers have theorized that it’s “unmet expectations” that could be driving the U-shape in well-being and age. Regret over unfulfilled dreams may explain the drop in happiness from young adults, who expect a bright future, which is then felt significantly in midlife.

 

 

Eventually, this regret and expectation is abandoned later in life, which results in a rise in happiness.

His electric-­car manufacturer is launching a new product line: large batteries that store energy in homes and even larger batteries that do the same for utilities and businesses. The Powerwall, a slender appliance designed to be mounted in your garage, comes in five colors and starts at $3,000; the Powerpack, an 8-foot-tall steel box that looks a bit like a utility transformer, is aimed at the energy industry and costs roughly $25,000. These prices are roughly half of what competing battery manufacturers charge.
