A GigaOM guide to Kickstarter wannabes

A GigaOM guide to Kickstarter wannabes | The Crowdfunding Atlas | Scoop.it
Kickstarter has kicked off a movement, with crowdfunding startups popping up everywhere. We offer this guide to help you keep track of the new Kickstarter ecosystem.

Well, this was almost useful. A little bit  ahistorical, a little bit misguided in focusing on "sectors," thoroughly incomplete accounting of existing platforms, and then there's that phrase, "the Kickstarter Ecosystem." Ugh. Mr. Kim will come to regret this article. -ABS

Why We are Picky: The Importance of Curation in Crowdfunding - Forbes

Why We are Picky: The Importance of Curation in Crowdfunding - Forbes | The Crowdfunding Atlas | Scoop.it

We believe careful curation is critical for the long-term success of equity crowdfunding. Thus, fewer than 2% of company applicants to CircleUp end up being accepted on our site. It is also why we have advocated for strong regulations by the SEC. If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that totally wide open capital markets are not good for investors or the U.S economy. Below are 9 guidelines we use to help inform our decision-making here at CircleUp. While some are particular to operating a crowdfunding platform, most of these guidelines are equally applicable for all equity investors, and should be carefully considered whether you are investing by yourself, in an Angel group, or through a crowdfunding platform.

CROWDFUNDING AN ARTIST'S ‘SALARY’: Pink-slipped political cartoonist is ‘overwhelmed’ by Indiegogo campaign

CROWDFUNDING AN ARTIST'S ‘SALARY’: Pink-slipped political cartoonist is ‘overwhelmed’ by Indiegogo campaign | The Crowdfunding Atlas | Scoop.it

Pink-slipped political cartoonist is ‘overwhelmed’ by Indiegogo campaign to replace his job.

Crowdfunding stress test, moreso than lawsuits for missed deadlines or patent infringment. Why? Will the crowd prepay a worker to deliver their value before it has been rendedered surplus value in a work environment?

Another way to think about it: is the shaman making a comeback through crowdfunding? Artists do extremely well in these campaigns. So far, the crowd has only been asked to fund specific projects, but what if--and wow how big is this--what if the crowd really wants to make sure they can depend on the output of their favorite artist and are therefore willing to remove the obstacle of income/housing/food?!

I am enthralled. -ABS

NASAA WARNS INVESTORS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES ABOUT CROWD FUNDING INVESTMENTS - Robert Wayne Pearce - Seeking Alpha

NASAA WARNS INVESTORS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES ABOUT CROWD FUNDING INVESTMENTS - Robert Wayne Pearce - Seeking Alpha | The Crowdfunding Atlas | Scoop.it

The North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA), an organization comprised of the 50 state securities regulators, believes that the crowd funding provisions of the so-called JOBS Act are just another "Regulation D-like rip-off," according to InvestmentNews ("Crowd funding draws scorn from NASAA," by Mark Schoff Jr.). Regulation D provides a registration exemption for certain investments that are privately offered - i.e., not offered by means of a general solicitation to the public at large.

Perhaps...What is troubling is the hijacking of the term, "crowdfunding" to only mean taking an equity stake. Those us interested in consumer/user-driven side of crodwfunding should be concerned. Such vague messaging with such intense vitriol could ensnare all of the crowdfunding landscape into one big legal trap. -ABS

Crowdfunding campaign launched to help pay for construction of Hudson’s Zach Tompkins Memorial Stadium- NashuaTelegraph.com

Crowdfunding campaign launched to help pay for construction of Hudson’s Zach Tompkins Memorial Stadium- NashuaTelegraph.com | The Crowdfunding Atlas | Scoop.it

The stadium’s groundbreaking ceremony was Oct. 26, and now the late 11-year-old’s family is looking to finish the work it started. Necole Tompkins, who created the Zachary M. Tompkins Memorial Fund a month after her son’s passing, launched a crowdfunding campaign last week to garner more donations for the stadium with a price tag of approximately $1 million.

Zach Tompkins was a football player for the Hudson-Litchfield Bears who died in his sleep March 10, 2010. The honor student at Presentation of Mary Academy dreamed of one day having a stadium for his team to play at.

This is heartbreaking at several points in the story. For me, a big one is the launch of this capaign on Fundageek.com. Why on earth would they accept this project? Why not IndieGoGo? There is a history there of funding building/construction projects that are memorials. I hope they reach their goal, but I also hope the abestos abatement is done properly. Hair standing on end-ABS
