On Early Warning Signs § SEEDMAGAZINE.COM | The Crowdfunding Atlas | Scoop.it
Rapid shifts are the hallmark of climate change, epileptic seizures, financial crises, and fishery collapses. Deep mathematical principles tie these events together.
Anna B. Scott's insight:

Dense, but necessary read for all of you disruptors out there. Of particular interest was this passage:

"The global financial meltdown illustrates the phenomenon of critical slowing and spatial resonance. Leading up to the crash, there was a marked increase in homogeneity among institutions, both in their revenue-generating strategies as well as in their risk-management strategies, thus increasing correlation among funds and across countries—an early warning. Indeed, with regard to risk management through diversification, it is ironic that diversification became so extreme that diversification was lost: Everyone owning part of everything creates complete homogeneity. Reducing risk by increasing portfolio diversity makes sense for each individual institution, but if everyone does it, it creates huge group or system-wide risk."

Implications? For one, the SEC would do well to implement the JOBS Act as it represents the possibility for avoiding homogenaity in investing. However, if a large enough group of wanna-be venture capitalists dive into "crowdvesting," convincing fund managers to come along for the ride, we might get a "spatial pulse" that will yank down Main St. so quickly, we'll pine for the 2008 collapse. ¿Verdad? --ABS

The Year Of Kickstarter Journalism: Crowdfunding Is Doing What The News Industry Can’t

The Year Of Kickstarter Journalism: Crowdfunding Is Doing What The News Industry Can’t | The Crowdfunding Atlas | Scoop.it
Crowdfunded journalism is exploding at a time the news industry is struggling to figure out a sustainable business model.
Anna B. Scott's insight:

Once again another lightly researched article drops a trend at the doorstep of Kickstarter, one which the company did not start. Since 2010, Spot.us has been making "community-funded reporting" possible. Aquired in 2011 by American Public Media, Spot.us continues to get stories reported that would otherwise be ignored.

There are crowdfunding sites for photojournalists, political advertising, documentary film, and youth journalism. And oh yeah, NPR is famously funded by the crowd. Kickstarter is joining a movement, not creating one. --ABS

Social Impact Is Investing, Not Fundraising - TheNonProfitTimes

Social Impact Is Investing, Not Fundraising - TheNonProfitTimes | The Crowdfunding Atlas | Scoop.it
Modern philanthropy is about results, not just money. Consider the partnership between Goldman Sachs, Bloomberg Philanthropies and the nonprofit MDRC.
Anna B. Scott's insight:

"Twenty-first century philanthropy is 'investment in solutions, not cash for problems,' said Raymond. 'What that means is (philanthropists) expect evidence of impact. Money is contingent on results. Impact, not intention, is the coin of the realm.'”

Crowdfunding Predictions for 2013 - Forbes

Crowdfunding Predictions for 2013 - Forbes | The Crowdfunding Atlas | Scoop.it
2012 was quite a year for the crowdfunding industry. In April, President Obama signed the JOBS Act into law, which will open up equity-based crowdfunding for unaccredited investors.
Anna B. Scott's insight:

Wow.  Check this:

"While Kickstarter can be successful as the Amazon.com of crowdfunding, other donation sites will need to differentiate and own a particular niche to stay relevant [...]."

Sorry Mr. Caldbeck, but Kickstarter IS a highly differientiated site. You meant to list GoFundMe.com, IndieGoGo and Rally, right? Oh yes, your editor was worried that you would not look relevant if you did not mention Kickstarter iny our article about crowdfunding even though they do not fit your argument.

This type of myth making needs to stop. It is creating additional confusion among consumers, fund raisers, and investors. --ABS

Why 84% of Kickstarter's top projects shipped late

Why 84% of Kickstarter's top projects shipped late | The Crowdfunding Atlas | Scoop.it
A CNNMoney examination of the top 50 most-funded projects on Kickstarter found that 84% missed their target delivery dates, with some delayed by many months.
Anna B. Scott's insight:

Kickstarter did not launch crowdfunding, nor is it a store. It's hard to explain to people that they are backing a process and not a product when they are promised the product as a gift for their support.  Maybe there should be a exit poll after each pledge: did you back this project because: a) it's really cool b)it's really cool and I really wnat one of my own; c) it's really cool and I want to be a part of making this real.

That would help project admins determine when to turn off their campaign, assuming they get to their goal faster than anticipated, as has been the case for the "super earners" reviewed in this article. -ABS
