Why crowdfunding hasn't caught on in Asia - Fortune Tech

Why crowdfunding hasn't caught on in Asia - Fortune Tech | The Crowdfunding Atlas | Scoop.it

The crowdfunding industry made it clear it isn't going anywhere last year. Popular crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo made it simple for entrepreneurs to fund their creative projects by soliciting donations from the general public. With more than 600 platforms worldwide, crowdfunding has grown from a $530 million industry in 2009 to nearly $2.7 billion last year, according to a recent study by Massolution, a research firm specializing in crowdsourcing businesses.

The relatively new funding strategy -- in which entrepreneurs receive donations often in exchange for small perks or gifts -- is predicted to eclipse $5 billion in total funding in 2013, according to the study.

But not everyone has fully adopted crowdfunding. Platforms in Asia, home to more than half of the world's population, were responsible for only $33 million in funding last year—just over 1% of the total raised, according to the study. With so many entrepreneurs relying on the masses to jumpstart their projects, it's noticeable that the largest concentration of people on the globe appears to be uninterested.

Anna B. Scott's insight:

A significant compnent of crowdfunding is the psychology of the giver. I know of a very successful campaign for a heart transplant for an African American where a number of would-be backers just assumed that the candidate was milking the government for the heart, and not your avergae insured American who has run out of coverage.  We'll see how this goes for businesses.

'Dark Intellectual Property': Why We Need a Kickstarter for Patents | Wired Opinion | Wired.com

'Dark Intellectual Property': Why We Need a Kickstarter for Patents | Wired Opinion | Wired.com | The Crowdfunding Atlas | Scoop.it
You’ve heard of the “deep web" and may also have heard of “dark social,” but what you may not know about yet is “dark IP” -- the intellectual property that remains on the shelf: undiscovered, unexplored, untapped.
Anna B. Scott's insight:

Here's my question: have you experienced being part of a community of backers on Kickstarter or any other crowdfunding platform? Do you move in a swarm, or school, or mob when you vote, or are you just following the crowd?

The author assumes that the self-selection that leads to an individual "joining" Kickstarter also leads to them creating and leveraging relationships on the platform beyond their initial interest. I am not so sure that is totally true--maybe for people into getting their hands on the latest tech before it comes to market--but for everyone else, are you roaming the high seas of backing looking for a deserving whale of an idea?

Would dark IP be subject to popularity of novelty or to popularity based on intellectually engaged assessment? The questions the questions. -ABS

SEC lifts hedge-fund advertising ban

SEC lifts hedge-fund advertising ban | The Crowdfunding Atlas | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday approved a rule lifting a decades-old ban on hedge-fund advertising.
Anna B. Scott's insight:

Here it is: the ban on hedge fund advertising is lifted. This could play out spectacularly well for crowdvesting firms and be a pure calamity in the hands of multinationals seeking to extract capital through brand recognition. So small fries with big plans, get your products ready and tell your story as best you can before people decide that it is better to stick with the big names. -ABS

Crowdfunding Trends: Which Crowdfunding Sites Will Survive

Crowdfunding Trends: Which Crowdfunding Sites Will Survive | The Crowdfunding Atlas | Scoop.it
According to industry estimates, there are currently over 500 active crowdfunding platforms – some sources have quoted 9,000 registered domain names related to crowdfunding.
Anna B. Scott's insight:

When I see an article using Kickstarter's total raise as a benchmark, I cringe. Here is why: for the person hoping to do a successful raise, percentage of successful campaigns is far more useful a metric. Kickstarter has yet to break 50% successful completion rate. When you drill down into their categories, you will see a money skew: tech brings in more dollars, but art & culture projects are more successful, though they raise less.

When Ryan Caldbeck gets down to the end of his article, it becomes clear why he pushing the total raised: percentage for the VC. Consumer, be wary of using articles like these to drive your decision making for selecting a platform through which to raise your funds. This article was written for people looking to consume platforms to, er, take a slice of your hard raised cash as their income.

Bottom line? do not let some one's investment strategy drive your fundraising strategy.

Oh, and we don't need more regulation, Caldbeck. We need JOBS Act rules delivered.  --ABS

Anna B. Scott's insight:

Both fantastic, and maddening: wither PUBLIC art?! Is the lack of public funding--cause, um, crowdfunding is private funding, peer-to-peer, but private nonetheless--driving the rush to the spectacular, or really, do audiences like to be participant-observers of their emotinal ride from the conception to the articulation fo a project?
