Guards get combat pay, just like troops in Afghanistan, without the risk of being blown up. Some commanders get to bring their families to this war-on-terror deployment. And each captive gets $38.45 worth of food a day.

Editorial: Cost too high in unwinnable war

IT'S a perfectly reasonable question for any average Australian to ask: what are we doing in Afghanistan? Our nation has lost 33 soldiers in this conflict that is now regarded as unwinnable and we have precious little to show for the sacrifice.
