Smart Travel Advice: Ignore All Travel Tips (Except This One, Of Course) - The Huffington Post
Lavinia Klum's insight:

I've been following Gary Arndt's odyssey since 2007, when he started traveling more or less non-stop. "I've been to over 140 countries and territories around the world and all 7 continents," he says. "I also have made a point of visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites whenever I can." To date, he's visited and photographed 262 World Heritage sites around the globe for his site, Everything-Everywhere.com. Arndt was also named the 2014 Travel Photographer of the Year by the Society of American Travel Writers.

What makes him the world's smartest traveler? The fact that he doesn't think he's one of the world's smartest travelers, and which, I confess, made me want to feature him all the more in this series. Why? Because if he's not one of the world's smartest travelers, then I don't know who is. "My biggest travel tip is to ignore most travel tips," he says. "We too often get caught in the minutiae of travel and ignore the bigger picture. Throw stuff in a bag and go. You'll figure it out." He makes a good point. Travelers tend to obsess about packing perfectly or getting the best exchange rate or the lowest fare. "I've landed in dozens of countries without a hotel reservation or a penny of local currency and managed to get by," says Arndt. "We live in an amazing world and travel is our chance to see and experience it. Don't lose sight of the big picture."

The World's Smartest Traveler is a weekly series about the visionaries who inspire us to travel smarter. Its curator, Christopher Elliott, is the author of the upcoming book, How to Be The World's Smartest Traveler (National Geographic Books). Want to nominate someone for this feature? Send Chris a note.

The data are in and Hong Kong is victorious: based on
Lavinia Klum's insight:

The data are in and Hong Kong is victorious: based on 2012 travel patterns (apparently these studies take some time to compile) the HKSAR drew more visitors than any other city in the world. That that, Singapore (3rd) and Bangkok (4th place).

Now, not to rain on Hong Kong's parade, but the fact that visitors from mainland China counted as "international travelers" does pretty significantly skew the results. The Wall Street Journal blog covered HK's new ranking and they admitted, "to be sure, a large portion of the visits from the mainland to Hong Kong are day-trippers from neighboring Shenzhen looking to stock up on daily necessities, such as milk powder."

When New York City (ranked 8th) gets "international travelers," they come from, well, other countries. With Hong Kong, it's a bit sketchier.

This is just fair warning for when Euromonitor (the company who ran this study) publishes its "Top 100 City Destinations" as some kind of hot travel guide, readers should be wary that many of their fellow "international" travelers will be a bunch of Guangdongers running to snag some milk powder, update their Facebook apps, orgive people avian flu.

Going on Vacation? Use Our Credit Card CheckList!

Going on Vacation? Use Our Credit Card CheckList! | The Corliss Group Luxury Travel Agency | Scoop.it

Going on vacation? Congrats! You’ve earned it. To maximize your enjoyment during your time away, you’ll want to make a few essential preparations. The last thing you need is the credit card company freezing your account while shop-hopping in Soho or guzzling Hefeweizen in Munich. Here’s a quick checklist of easy steps you can take to ready your accounts for a trip abroad.

1. Call the credit card company

2. Make a list of essential info

3. Get up to speed with your rewards program

4. Get a better travel card

5. Know your holds and limits

6. Pay your bills in advance

Call the credit card company

Creditors take active measures to detect theft and prevent fraud–for both your and their own sake. When they notice an aberration in spending patterns, they often freeze the suspect account to stop potential criminal activity. If your credit card hasn’t left Ohio in two years and it suddenly starts making extravagant purchases in Seoul, the issuer will likely deactivate the account until you verify your identity and location. This can result in major inconveniences abroad, especially if you don’t have easy access to a phone line. Call your credit card companies a week or so in advance to tell them your travel plans.

Make a list of essential info

When traveling, you put yourself at greater risk for losing a card due to theft, negligence or silly mistakes. When this happens, you need to act fast to close your accounts. Before you travel, make a list of your account numbers and the phone numbers for the corresponding credit card companies. Give one copy to a trusted friend or relative, and stash the other deep in your suitcase. You can put this information on a mobile device as well, but it will be compromised if you lose your phone. The ability to connect quickly with customer service will minimize the damages of theft or displacement.
