SmartThings and others are taking a more open approach to this. Again it looks to be tied to a wireless network, so you can't use it from anywhere you would like.

I like the fact that they aim to have external parties create hardware and apps to use their IoT solution. As far as I can tell it's however only for deployments in your home since the objects need to communicate with a specific router. Would be great if the objects were directly connected to the system (over telephone networks or specific radio solutions such as Sigfox - http://www.sigfox.com)
