Networks to Neighborhoods

Networks to Neighborhoods | The Collaborative Society | Scoop.it
We are just beginning to see the deepening of our connections past a click, follow, or friend confirmation. These platforms are ultimately still in beta and haven’t reached their plateau, but that makes them ripe for richer humanization. Howard Rheingold, former editor of the Whole Earth Catalog and the writer who coined the term “virtual community,” shared his optimism for those actively shaping platforms in the image of successful offline systems in a Monitor Institute interview: “The way you explore this space is the way life happens,” he wrote. “There are a lot of experiments and most of them die. The ones that work find an advantage in the environment. They suddenly make energy out of light, and that makes everything possible.”

» TaskRabbit Turns Grunt Work Into a Game

» TaskRabbit Turns Grunt Work Into a Game | The Collaborative Society | Scoop.it
Think of TaskRabbit as an eBay for real-world labor. When users, called senders, post a task, they also invisibly declare the maximum amount they’d pay to have it completed. Runners then bid on the task by declaring the minimum amount they would accept. Unlike on eBay, though, senders can choose freely from among the bids, since the reviews and experience levels of runners can vary significantly: Highly rated runners—or those who happen to be available immediately for a rush job—can command significant premiums. Tasks range from courier assignments that can take just a little while to jobs like moving help that can take hours and are often scheduled up to a week in advance. TaskRabbit takes a 12 to 30 percent cut of each transaction; the higher percentages are deducted from lower-value jobs. Customers pay by credit card, and the runner’s share gets deposited into a TaskRabbit account, with checks cut every Friday

When Jessica Scorpio uses the word “overpopulation," chances are she's talking about cars, not people. “There are a billion cars on the planet today, and if we don’t do something, in 20 years there will be two billion,” says the Getaround co-founder.

Crowdsource Photojournalism Projects With Emphas.is

When you’re an independent journalist, it can be difficult to raise funding for purchasing equipment, covering travel, and pursuing your stories. Crowdfunding is a popular method of fund raising, and services like Kickstarter, IndieGoGo, and ChipIn can make the process easy. There’s now a new crowdfunding platform on the Internet — Emphas.is — and it’s specifically for photojournalists.

» How Kickstarter Became a Lab for Daring Prototypes and Ingenious Products | The Collaborative Society | Scoop.it
A group of modern makers kick-started a website for passion projects and patrons.
More than 14,000 people have posted projects on Kickstarter, and more than 400,000 people have supported them, contributing a total of more than $35 million. Eighty new projects are launched every day, and $1 million is pledged every week. The site has tapped a source of patronage that was all but nonexistent before. The result, says cofounder and CEO Perry Chen, has been the realization of thousands of passion projects—a lone sailor who wanted to travel the world and send Polaroids and origami boats to backers, a designer who created a free online library of symbols, a vegan food truck in Louisville—that might never have found funding otherwise. “Kickstarter has the potential to jump-start—I guess the word would be kick-start—an explosion of creation and invention,” says Caterina Fake, cofounder of Flickr and an investor in the site. “There was a compelling need for something like this.”

Help Fund Our Work! : What Happens When

Help Fund Our Work! : What Happens When | The Collaborative Society | Scoop.it
NEVER THE SAME PLACE TWICE
What Happens When is a playground for food. It is a temporary restaurant installation that transforms every 30 days for 9 months, offering guests an ever-changing culinary, visual and sound experience.
This delicious exhibition is a result of the collaboration between one chef, two designers, a photographer and a composer.
We are building this ourselves and are interested in using a new model of fundraising that reflects our collaborative spirit. To support this ethos, we will use Kickstarter (a new way to fund creative ideas and ambitious endeavors) to raise money support not only the physical environment, but also the work of the creatives involved.
As an added layer of involvement, with every donation, we’re asking supporters to also send in a favorite food memory that we can add to our inspiration table. It’s a way of going beyond traditional funding by engaging people in our creative process.

- a video containing one of my tracks
- a review, a comic, a graphic, anything!

Craig Shapiro of Collaborative Fund and GOOD Talks BankSimple, Drudge Report, Socially-Conscious Investing, and the Start-Up He’d Most Like to See

Craig Shapiro of Collaborative Fund and GOOD Talks BankSimple, Drudge Report, Socially-Conscious Investing, and the Start-Up He’d Most Like to See | The Collaborative Society | Scoop.it
Collaborative’s investment philosophy is pretty simple, he said. The fund–which launched at the end of 2010 with $6 million, but has raised an undisclosed amount more–focuses on companies that encourage collaborative consumption in a way that aligns social benefit with profitability. So far, that hasn’t been easy.

“I do find it challenging to find start-ups that are working on world-changing ideas,” he said. “And a world-changing idea doesn’t need to be solving global poverty. It can be something very simple. But I do think that first-world problems, like not being able to find a parking space–it actually may be a good business opportunity, but it’s not something that I’m really interested in.”

We are no longer living in a mass culture, built around mass production, mass education, mass entertainment, and weapons of mass destruction. Rather we are now living in a mesh world built around the mesh of networks, the mesh of relationships, the mesh of entertainment and education webs.
"Sharing is the new vital verb in society. Not that sharing itself is new, but that the ways, dimensions, amplitude, volume, geography, frequency, span, diversity, and colors of sharing have expanded greatly."
