Learning for a Change

Learning for a Change | the Change Samurai | Scoop.it

It's been 22 years since Peter Senge, published "The Fifth Discipline: The Art & Practice of the Learning Organization" (Doubleday/Currency, 1990). The book was more than a business best-seller; it was a breakthrough. It propelled Senge into the front ranks of management thinkers, it created a language of change that people in all kinds of companies could embrace, and it offered a vision of workplaces that were humane and of companies that were built around learning.

Anne Landreat's curator insight, October 28, 5:00 AM

One of the main keys to change is middle management. Yes. Avoiding transformation processes turning into dull meetings, PowerPoint presentations and ticking the boxes exercise is another. And this may be done only by the reconquest of the human part of the entire organization, middle managers included. Because the key factor for change, deep change, is empathy. The example of nurse Michelle delaCalle shows this obviously. Put yourself in the shoes of your users, clients, subordinates, colleagues from other divisions, and even managers and see how you feel. Like it ? No ? Then change the way you act.

David Hain's curator insight, October 28, 5:27 AM

"We think of mid-level managers as managing incremental change — but many are change leaders in the making. When they align their personal goals and strengths with the organization’s goals, they become extraordinary leaders." ` Behnam Tabrizi

Stream Stages: A New (?) Way of Defining Where You Are in Change Management

Stream Stages: A New (?) Way of Defining Where You Are in Change Management | the Change Samurai | Scoop.it
Every change management project has to go through upstream, midstream, and downstream. By viewing change management through these three streams, practitioners can understand where they are in the change management process.
the Change Samurai's insight:

This is a little frustrating particularly if you are Linda and Dean Anderson authors of The Change Leaders Roadmap (2010) who have as their model Up/Mid/Downstream change. What is even more bizarre is that this was pre reading study for the Advanced Prosci course that I attended in Chicago in May 2011 .. facilitated by Tim Creasy!

Haven’t we talked about employee engagement enough? Nope! Because despite the amount of time, energy and effort that organizations around the globe are investing in helping engage people in work, things aren’t improving much. Weekly pizza socials, guest speakers and telecommuting options are certainly appealing. I like pizza as much as the next guy. And, […]

Lisa McCarthy's curator insight, October 23, 6:12 AM

Cultures tend to resist what they most need to change because people resist changing life-long habits and beliefs that are an engrained part of their personal and professional lives.

It is not just fear of the unknown. My experience was there was exceptionally poor communication, top-down oppressive ways of dealing with change, faddish approaches, etc. For example, the implementation of the 7 Habits work and digital technologies was a handful of people's dictates rather than consulting with classroom teachers who were doing the heavy lifting.
