March 20 – The Danish Football Association (DBU) have said they expressed interest in hosting the U-17 World Cup, but never heard back from FIFA who awarded the next five editions of the tournament to Qatar, claiming the decision “followed a global call for expressions of interest.” 
Danish newspaper Ekstrabladet reports that the DBU was keen on staging the youth tournament in 2025 and informed FIFA of their interest. It is understood that the Danes weren’t the only European national association to be blindsided by FIFA’s decision. Read more …

February 27 – Despite the German football league capitulating to fan power over third party investment, more protests occurred at the weekend, this time over Germany’s much coveted 50+1 rule.

February 15 – Belgian clubs in the top two divisions recorded a cumulative loss of €193 million for the 2022-23 season, the licensing commission confirmed on Wednesday. Club Brugge, Union, STVV, Racing Genk, Kortrijk and Cercle Brugge were the only clubs out of 25 to not make a loss, confirming once again the chronic financial mismanagement that plagues Belgian clubs.
The cumulative loss exceeds the €156 million deficit of the 2021-22 season by 37 million euros.

April 15 – Spain’s LaLiga is reporting record total revenue of €5.69 billion for the 2022-23 season an increase of 17.8% over the 2021/22 season beating the pre-covid high mark of €5.07 billion in 2019-20.
LaLiga said the revenue was boosted by by commercial revenues that increased 28.6% year-on-year and a 36.9% increase in stadium attendances to more than 15 million over the season, the league’s highest ever.
LaLiga said average stadium occupancy is now at 72%.

April 3 – Luis Rubiales, the disgraced former president of the Spanish football federation (RFEF), has been arrested as part of a corruption investigation.
He was detained on his arrival in Madrid from the Dominican Republic.
The case is separate to the ‘Kissgate’ scandal for which Spanish prosecutors are seeking a prison term of two years and six months for Rubiales.
