I can think of so many ways to use this!!

"As I mentioned in my previous post, this morning I gave a short presentation on mobile learning activities. One of the activities that I included in the presentation included the use of iNaturalist (previously reviewed here) and Project Noah to get your students outside and recording observations of nature."

4 Keys To Designing A Project-Based Learning Classroom - TeachThought

4 Keys To Designing A Project-Based Learning Classroom - TeachThought | The Browse | Scoop.it
What are the keys designing a project-based learning classroom? It starts with the teacher.
Stacey Py Flynn's insight:

Learning Spaces Help Set the Tone -- One of the defining characteristics of a PBL classroom is the emphasis on group work: Students work with their peers to solve problems. That means the space must be organized in a way that supports collaboration — neat lines of forward-facing desks are the enemy. In a multi-disciplinary elementary classroom, portable floor mats or cushions are an excellent alternative to traditional desks, at least during group work periods.

Stacey Py Flynn's insight:

"Librarians have faith in readers, regardless of their age, to take what they need from texts. We work to find reasons to include materials in our libraries’ collections. A school librarian friend of mine, who has fought her own battles with censorship, told me, “Wouldn’t it be a wonderful thing if ,when one wants to raise that ugly word of ‘censor,’ he would first be required to state the positive sides of a read? Where it could be used? How it might benefit someone?”

Ignoring the Evidence: Another Decade of Decline for School Libraries | Canadian Education Association (CEA) | The Browse | Scoop.it
Why doesn’t the research on school libraries resonate with educational policymakers and funding allocators? (Library: An interesting read on school libraries.

Via Karen Bonanno
Anu Ojaranta's curator insight, April 20, 2:29 AM

"Four decades of research from Canada, the U.S., and Australia indicates that well-staffed, well-stocked, and well-used school libraries are correlated with increases in student achievement on the order of 4 percent to 20 percent, as measured on student performance on standardized tests, overall school performance, and student performance in reading comprehension and in academic subjects.[1] Other studies have shown improvements in students’ attitudes towards reading and in the collaborative nature of school culture.[2]"

Desicions are obviously made blindfolded... Very sad reading, still hoping that the research results would in the long run make a difference. We need to be more vigorous in advocating! Greeyings, Anu

Seth Dixon's curator insight, April 13, 4:34 PM

This interactive resource is worth exploring and letting students explore it at home or within a computer lab environment.  Geocube isn't just a single random link; Geocube is a portal to numerous topics, regions and themes that allows the user to explore what geography is without being constrained to do so in a linear fashion.  Having been voted by the American Association of School Librarians as one of the "Top 25 websites for Teaching and Learning," Geocube comes highly recommended, and rightfully so.  This is a must-see as it puts the world of geography at your fingertips.

Stacey Py Flynn's insight:

“The first reason to read aloud to older kids is to consider the fact that a child’s reading level doesn’t catch up to his listening level until about the eighth grade,” said Trelease, referring to a 1984 study performed by Dr. Thomas G. Sticht showing that kids can understand books that aretoo hard to decode themselves if they are read aloud. “You have to hear it before you can speak it, and you have to speak it before you can read it. Reading at this level happens through the ear.”
