Tablets vs. Textbooks: Should tablets replace textbooks in K-12 schools?

Tablets vs. Textbooks: Should tablets replace textbooks in K-12 schools? | The Bridge | Scoop.it

"Publishing for the K-12 school market is an $8 billion industry, with three companies - McGraw-Hill, Pearson, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt - capturing about 85% of this market. Tablets are a $35 billion industry with roughly one in three adults owning a tablet. As tablets have become more prevalent, a new debate has formed over whether K-12 school districts should switch from print textbooks to digital textbooks on tablets."

MOOCs Are Changing the Online Education Business | The Bridge | Scoop.it

"If you were asked to name the most important innovation in transportation over the last 200 years, you might say the combustion engine, air travel, Henry Ford’s Model-T production line, or even the bicycle. The list goes on. Now answer this one: what’s been the single biggest innovation in education?"

TEDxGlasgow - Donald Clark - More pedagogic change in 10 years than last 1000 years

Search, links, media sharing, social media, Wikipedia, games, open source etc. are ground breaking shifts in the way we learn, says Donald Clark. Unfortunate...

Via Susan Bainbridge
Anne Whaits's curator insight, March 7, 1:12 PM

The real scalibility in education comes with the Internet....freeing education from a place and from a specific time. With this comes changing pedagogies including peer-learning. Donald makes a case for recording lectures - videos provide opportunity for repeated access to new content. Some familiar messages here and interesting focus on scalibility.

"With more students, fewer teachers and less money, school systems are searching for ways to stay competitive with what they offer students. An increasing trend to reach that objective is to look at other platforms of instruction — specifically a virtual option."

Free mobile tools for online students | The Bridge | Scoop.it

"Educators are looking for ways to effectively integrate social media into their online courses, and a number of free, mobile-friendly resources make it easy for students to use blogs, polls, and other tools. Integrating social media into an online course has a number of benefits, said EdTech Leaders Online’s Lesley Reily during an edWeb.net webinar. Reily said she frequently uses Twitter in her online courses and counts mobile access as one of her most important requirements."

Study: Students Want Teachers To Use Technology ASAP | The Bridge | Scoop.it

"One of my favorite comments ever was from a teacher who was talking about her journey bringing technology into her classroom and developing activities around the tools she had found. She was enjoying herself, the students loved the activities and were learning the material – so what could be going wrong? She was basically berated by another teacher because their shared students were complaining that they liked the technology-based classroom learning better, and that the other teacher’s stuff was boring."

Teachers Find iPad Slide-sharing App Nearpod Like 'PowerPoint on Steroids'

Teachers Find iPad Slide-sharing App Nearpod Like 'PowerPoint on Steroids' | The Bridge | Scoop.it

"Technology director and teacher Frederico Padovan may be only a few weeks into his school's first 1-to-1 iPad deployment, but he's already figured out how to keep students focused on their lessons. He's not worried about students steering away to surf the Web or chatting with friends on their new devices. Since the first day of school, Padovan has been using Nearpod, a slide-based multimedia app that lets teachers create presentations by populating pre-built templates with an entire lesson's worth of text, images, and video. Then, using a special teacher version of the app, the presentations can be pushed out to an entire class, who use their own student version, allowing the teacher great control over the tempo and pace of the lesson."

The Modern Taxonomy Wheel

The Modern Taxonomy Wheel | The Bridge | Scoop.it

" This Taxonomy wheel was first discovered on the website of Paul Hopkin’s educational consultancy website mmiweb.org.uk That wheel was produced by Sharon Artley and was an adaption of Kathwohl and Anderson’s (2001) adaption of Bloom (1956). The idea to further adapt it for the pedagogy possibilities with mobile devices, in particular the iPad, I have to acknowledge the creative work of Kathy Schrock on her website Bloomin’ Apps."

EasyBib Developer: Student research is incredibly shallow

EasyBib Developer: Student research is incredibly shallow | The Bridge | Scoop.it

"As an entrepreneur, I certainly understand the importance of questioning, whether it be ideas, strategies or failures. More importantly, through our product EasyBib, we have direct insight into the questioning and inquiry skills of students. And it’s scary. Guess what the most cited source is on EasyBib? Wikipedia. Five other top 20 sources are also user-generated websites, including Wiki Answers and Yahoo Voices. This means two things: 1. Students are not questioning the authority of what they find on the internet. They take information at face value. 2. Student research is incredibly shallow. They consistently use sources that are the first few results on a search engine, which are often reference sources. Students are not delving deep into topics, questioning more and more about what they are learning."

Why are Textbooks Bad for Education?

Why are Textbooks Bad for Education? | The Bridge | Scoop.it

"One of the problems for teachers is that the type of tools that they’re being given to equip kids to participate in these evolving new literacies, are not the kinds of tools that they need or that kids are going to be using outside of schools. So as long as we continue to equip teachers with textbooks as the primary resources for their lessons, and we don’t make available tools – like social networking tools, computers, and software specifically created to help kids engage with new tools, and new kinds of literacy, we’re setting the teachers up for failure. We’re giving them old tools, and then we’re giving them expectations and outcomes that their kids are going to be held accountable to, that don’t engage those kids [in the right ways]."

What Will Higher Education Look Like in 25 Years? | The Bridge | Scoop.it

"While most industries have changed significantly over the years, higher education has remained relatively the same. Students listen to professors lecture in century-old universities and tackle tough philosophical questions the way their ancestors did.

But higher education is at a breaking point. Tuition is skyrocketing. State funding is dropping. And online course providers are on the rise."
