Florida flight school owner who unwittingly trained 9/11 hijackers accused of trafficking cocaine and heroin

Florida flight school owner who unwittingly trained 9/11 hijackers accused of trafficking cocaine and heroin | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it
The 56-year-old man who unwittingly provided flight training for the hijackers who flew planes into the World Trade Center on 9/11 is now facing charges for trafficking cocaine and heroin.

Rudi Dekkers, once the owner of the Florida flight school that trained hijackers Mohammed Atta and Marwan Al-Shehhi, was arrested on Dec. 2 by Homeland Security agents after he was caught with a rolling suitcase full of cocaine and heroin, the Houston Chronicle reported. The hijackers were Dekkers' students from July 1 until Dec. 24, 2000.

Dekkers was recently brought to the attention of an undercover agent through his association with 36-year-old Arturo Astorquiza, a man who was being investigated for allegedly leading an international drug trafficking organization.

Dekkers is now facing charges of conspiracy to posses with the intent to distribute cocaine and heroin.

The former flight school owner has said his life slid into a downward spiral following the 9/11 attacks, when he was identified as the man who enrolled terrorists in his training program.

'Everywhere I come, they say, "Are you not that guy that trained terrorists?"' Dekkers said in a 2005 interview with the Herald-Tribune. 'I am without a job right now. I have no income anymore. My life was destroyed.'

Dekkers once reported a net worth of $12 million before his business was shuttered in the aftermath of the attacks, which he also attributes to destroying his 20-year marriage. He wrote a book about his ordeal titled 'Guilt by Association.'...

Florida Supreme Court strikes down 'loud radio' law

Florida Supreme Court strikes down 'loud radio' law | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it
Motorists are free to blast Justin Timberlake -- or any other music they choose -- as loud as they wish, the Florida Supreme Court ruled Wednesday.

The court unanimously struck down a state law barring drivers from blaring their radios at a volume that was "plainly audible" to someone 25 feet away. Three of the seven justices -- Chief Justice Ricky Polston and Justices Charles Canady and Peggy Quince -- didn't fully support the reasoning behind the decision, but didn't write opinions saying where they differed.

The ruling upholds the opinion of the 2nd District Court of Appeal, though the Supreme Court said the law was not unconstitutionally vague, one of the reasons the DCA gave for striking down the law. Instead, the high court said the law infringed on the freedom of expression.

Writing for the majority, Justice Jorge Labarga highlighted a part of the law that exempts commercial and political messages from the ban, saying that amounted to a restriction on certain kinds of speech, a violation of the First Amendment.

Labarga's ruling was skeptical of the state's argument that the ban was justified because it makes traffic safer -- but said that didn't matter.

The case was brought by Richard Catalano, a lawyer who got a $73 ticket for listening to Justin Timberlake on his way to work one morning in 2007. Catalano said he was surprised by the fine and decided to fight the law's constitutionality in court...

PASCO COUNTY -- A Pasco County man was arrested after detectives say he forced his wife to dinner at knifepoint.

According the sheriff's office, 49-year-old Robert Ball asked his estranged wife Janet Ball to stop by his house so he could talk to her about working their relationship out.

But once Janet got there and told him she didn't love him anymore, detectives say Robert became violent, punching her in the head, then taking her car keys and cell phone to stop her from leaving.

Then, things took an even scarier turn. Detectives say Robert pulled out a knife and made Janet to watch TV with him. Then they say he forced her to go to dinner with him at the Golden Corral.

The date didn't end there. Detectives say Robert made Janet go to Walmart, where he bought her shoes. Still threatening her with the knife, deputies say the pair returned to Robert's house where again he made her watch TV with him...

Miami Doctor Who Sexually Abused HIV Patients Finally Faces Justice -- 20 Years Later

Miami Doctor Who Sexually Abused HIV Patients Finally Faces Justice -- 20 Years Later | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it
Eighteen years after New Times warned the world about Kirkpatrick, "Doctor Scumbag" is finally sitting in a Florida jail on charges of forcibly sodomizing a teenage boy. The real question is why Miami law enforcement officials ever let him go in the first place.

It wasn't for lack of evidence. In a September 28, 1994 article titled "Bad Medicine," New Times laid out a compelling case against Kirkpatrick. "The rumors had been swirling around Miami's AIDS community for at least two years," reporter Elise Ackerman's piece began. "Dr. Homer L. Kirkpatrick Jr. would do more for his patients than just treat their HIV infections."

Kirkpatrick, then a 53-year-old with a medical degree from the University of Miami, was one of the only local doctors who would treat HIV-positive men without private insurance. For patients such as Ezekiel Lugo, a 39-year-old father who'd contracted HIV from drug use, Kirkpatrick's clinic on Douglas Road was their only option.

Lugo said Kirkpatrick began abusing him almost immediately...

Florida to hit its one-millionth concealed weapons permit next week

Florida to hit its one-millionth concealed weapons permit next week | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Florida is on pace to issue its one-millionth concealed weapons license next week.

This is at a time when the number of federally-required background checks of prospective gun purchasers in state has more than doubled in the past decade - and violent crime has been in long decline in many places across the USA, according to FBI records.

The Florida Department of Agriculture has issued more concealed weapons licenses than any other state, since 1987 a total of more than 2.3 million concealed weapons licenses have been issued, but the number of holders has grown rapidly over the past decade.

Ten years ago about 28,000 people applied for licenses each year. In 2010, that number soared to more than 167,000 applications in one year.

The bureau's National Instant Check System (NICS) does not track actual firearms sales - multiple guns can be included in one purchase. But the steady rise in background checks - from 8.5 million in 2002 to 16.8 million in 2012 - tracks other indicators that signal escalating gun sales.

No gun-control legislation was passed in President Obama's first term and no major proposal was offered during the 2012 presidential election campaign.

Still, there is an "expectation" that new gun-control proposals will surface in Obama's second term, said National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre. "People expect a siege on the Second Amendment (right to bear arms)..."

John McAfee At Beacon Hotel in South Beach, May Be in Miami For Awhile (VIDEO)

John McAfee At Beacon Hotel in South Beach, May Be in Miami For Awhile (VIDEO) | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it
MIAMI (CBSMiami) — After a whirlwind trip from Guatemala to Miami, anti-virus software founder John McAfee may be in South Florida for a while.

The normally reclusive millionaire software developer told CBS4’s Natalia Zea Thursday morning outside the Beacon Hotel on South Beach that U.S. authorities have made no efforts to question him since his arrival Wednesday night.

He had been held in a Guatemalan jail since his arrest for allegedly entering the country illegally last week. He was seeking asylum in the Central American country after claiming law enforcement officials in Belize were trying to charge him with murder in the death of his neighbor, Gregory Viant Faull...

McAfee arrived at Miami International Airport around 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Passengers said he was allowed to be the first person off the plane. He said U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agents and local police officers took care of him. He said it wasn’t special treatment and that they were just helping him find a safe place.

“I had the warmest welcome of my life,” said McAfee. “The captain patted me on the shoulders and said ‘We’re here to help you sir. Please come with us.’ Put me in a car, drove me around the airport for a long time, asked me where I wanted to go.”

They ended up taking him to a cab which drove him to Miami Beach, where he checked into the Beacon Hotel.

A source familiar with the McAfee’s situation told CBS4 News that McAfee was briefly questioned by IRS agents after he got off the plane in Miami. The source told CBS4 investigator Jim DeFede that federal agents are examining whether McAfee engaged in money laundering or tax evasion when he left the United States three years ago and settled in Belize.

Sources have told CBS4 News that the FBI may question McAfee because the victim in Belize is an American. However, he has not been charged with any crimes in the U.S....

Man accused of sex with mini-donkey named 'Doodle' challenges Florida 'zoophilia' law

Man accused of sex with mini-donkey named 'Doodle' challenges Florida 'zoophilia' law | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it
A Marion County man accused of having sex with a miniature donkey says a state law banning "zoophilia" is unconstitutional.

Assistant public defenders for farmhand Carlos R. Romero, 32, filed a motion asking a judge to have the statute overturned, according to the Ocala Star-Banner.

According to the motion, filed Dec. 6, the law was based on moral objection, that authorities could not prove the animal was injured and that there was no proof "of the sexual activity being non-consensual."

Romero was arrested in September and charged with misdemeanor sexual activity after a witness reported seeing him with his pants down and "up against the rear" of a female miniature donkey named Doodle, investigators said.

Romero later told investigators that he gets sexually aroused around animals more so than humans, the newspaper reported. He also said "people frown on zoophilia" in Florida.

According to the newspaper, Romero's challenge stated that the law against sexual activity with animals infringed on his rights and violated the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause. The motion also said the sentence for a conviction, a year in jail, was excessive...

PIC: Casey Anthony spotted eating at South Florida Flanigan's restaurant | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it
Billy Corben's insight:

If it looks like Casey Anthony, and dines with Casey Anthony acquaintances, then this woman in a booth at Flanigan’s Friday in Lake Worth probably was Casey Anthony!

The cellphone photo obtained exclusively by Gossip Extra is blurry — but there is circumstantial evidence.

The man across the table (who’s not in the picture) was identified by employees at the 10th Avenue seafood bar asPat McKenna – a West Palm Beach private eye who worked on Anthony’s defense.

McKenna is mostly known for his work in clearing fallen football icon OJ Simpson of murder in 1995.

But it so happens McKenna also worked for the defense team that had Anthony found not guilty last year of murdering her 2-year-old daughter Caylee in Orlando. And Gossip Extra reported in July that McKenna may be helping Anthony hide from a usually hostile public.

By the way, I’m told the man paid for the meal with a credit card that read “Patrick J. McKenna!” ...

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — The Ocala Police Department is investigating two robberies that occurred Thursday.

Officials said an armed black man approached two women and demanded money.

The second robbery took place near the 1600 block of Northwest 18th Court at 11 p.m.

The victim in that incident said she was returning home and retrieving items out of her car when she heard a click and was confronted by a black man holding a firearm, a report said.

Officers said the victim began talking to the man who wanted her money. A report said the victim replied, "I'm poor, baby. I don't have any money."

When the victim emptied her purse, two quarters fell out and she again said she was poor, officials said.

Investigators said the man then told the victim he was poor, hungry and homeless. The two then talked some more about the man getting help and the victim being a veteran, according to a report.

Police said the man asked the victim if she was going to call police and she said, "What for?" The man then walked away from the area.

It was not until family members encouraged the victim to call law enforcement that she called...

HOLLY HILL, Fla. (WTVR) – Police arrested a Florida man accused of killing his roommate over a pork chop. A man who lived in the home with the suspect, Tom Hahn, and the victim, Robert Gray, told WFTV that two were arguing over pork chops.

“I don’t know what was wrong with that pork chop, but they had some kind of argument over a pork chop,” roommate Tim Santimver said. “It’s usually very peaceful here and this was an isolated incident that got out of control.”

Collier County, Florida's 10 red light cameras are coming down (VIDEO)

Collier County, Florida's 10 red light cameras are coming down (VIDEO) | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it
Collier County Commissioners want the red light cameras to be taken down. The decision is one many drivers who have been ticketed before are happy to hear.

Commissioners against the lights say they have not lived up to their purpose. So now, they're opting out of their contract with the company supplying them.

The cameras are in place at 10 intersections throughout the county. But after Wednesday's decision they'll be coming down in February.

"Originally they were considered as a revenue generating program it was also going to provide improved safety in our community," said Commissioner Tim Nance.

But Nance argues data never supported either claim. He says the majority of fine money went to the company running the camera program.

He says he believes the cameras do not prevent the most serious crashes.

But above all, he says, drivers just hated them.

"The citizens think they're intrusive and set a bad example for our community," Nance explained...

Miami Beach Police Officer Manuel Moraga, Fired After ATV Crash, Gets Job Back

Miami Beach Police Officer Manuel Moraga, Fired After ATV Crash, Gets Job Back | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it
Manuel Moraga, a Miami Beach police officer who was fired after that now infamous ATV police crash on Fourth of July weekend of 2011, has won his job back. Moraga was not directly involved in the crash, but was supposed to be supervising the two officers who were. Instead he decided to go home early only to show up at an off duty gig a few hours later.

Miami Beach officer Derick Kuilan was supposed to be serving and protecting Saturday July 2nd, 2011. Instead he ended up at the Clevelander living it up with a bunch of bachelorette party revelers. He ended up drinking and decided to take one of the woman on an impromptu late night ATV ride along South Beach. The ATV ended up striking a couple who were lying in the sound.

Moraga was supposed to be supervising Kuilan and Rolando Gutierrez, another officer at the party (who, by the way, is married to Elian Gonzalez's cousin). Instead he allegedly ignored radio calls, and decided to go home a few hours early. He did show up a few hours later for an off-duty shift at a jewelry store though. After an investigation, the force decided to fire him.

He has now won his job back through an independent arbitrator...

Miami Family Enlists Help To Free Former Marine From Mexican Prison (VIDEO) | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A Palmetto Bay man who survived wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is now locked in a legal battle South of the border.

Jon Hammar, a 27-year old former Marine, was arrested this summer in Mexico because he carried an antique shotgun over the border. His parents said it was an honest mistake and are now enlisting help to free him.

Thursday morning they, along with their supporters, gathered at U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen’s office in South Florida.

John’s mother, Olivia, said he’s not doing well.

“We started receiving calls from members of the cartel saying, we have your son and we’re going to kill him. And then they’d put him on the phone, and I realize that they really did,” said Olivia Hammar.

The Hammars went public with their story a week ago, four months after Jon was locked up, because all diplomatic efforts seemed to be getting nowhere.

Olivia said her son spends his days shacked to his bed, reading a bible.

His friends have started a petition requesting his release. More than 9,000 people have signed the petition but it’s still unclear whether going public with the situation will help...
