My Top 5 Favorite Modern Marvel Movie Themes: #1 'Thor' (2011) by Patrick Doyle

Doyle wrote an incredible score for this movie (including an awesome 'Thor Theme') but his music for Thor and (brother-ish) Loki is a highlight of film music of the last several decades. The theme is versatile, brilliantly complimenting both gentle and epic moments involving the clashing gods. I really missed this theme in 'The Avengers.' (In the interest of full disclosure: this is my default ringtone when it's not 'It's All About The U' by Uncle Luke)

My Top 5 Favorite Modern Marvel Movie Themes: #2 'The Incredible Hulk' (2008) by Craig Armstrong

This one'll get your foot tapping: Hulk's theme is exotic, rhythmic, with a bass line that flawlessly evokes the lumbering green beast within Dr. Bruce Banner. Armstrong also wrote a dynamic theme for Banner and a stunning love theme for Bruce and Betty (there's even a brief quote of 'The Lonely Man,' the iconic theme from the Bill Bixby TV series written by Joe Harnell). This is one of the best Marvel scores ever.

Fort Lauderdale to Add 30 Red-Light Cameras: Your Handy Map

Fort Lauderdale to Add 30 Red-Light Cameras: Your Handy Map | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

If Fort Lauderdale's red-light program has helped traffic safety, there's no way to actually tell yet. Crashes at the six intersections where cameras are currently installed actually went up slightly after their installation. Despite the uncertainty, the Fort Lauderdale City Commission last week approved a measure to add 30 cameras at 15 new intersections around the city, and they're projected to be up and running by August 1...

My Top 5 Favorite Modern Marvel Movie Themes: #4 'Captain America: The First Avenger' (2011) by Alan Silvestri

This ol' fashioned movie march doesn't quite reach the euphoric (and nostalgic) heights of Silvestri's classic 'Back to the Future' theme (or John Williams' 'Superman March') -- but what movie music does anymore? This blunt work of World War II-era Americana, though, really does the trick for a hero who bleeds red, white and blue.

The beginning of the end for Miami's oldest bar: Tobacco Road Property Sold, Bar to Remain Open at Least Three More Years | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

My Top 5 Favorite Modern Marvel Movie Themes: #3 'X-Men: The Last Stand' by John Powell

The third movie in the "Original X-Men Trilogy" is not a fan favorite, but Powell's score (following noble efforts by Michael Kamen and John Ottman) is the best of the X-series. This cue opens with a lush John Barry-esque dirge for (spoiler alert) Professor X, transitions to the powerful 'X-Men Theme' and concludes with a stunning up-tempo reprise of the 'Dark Phoenix Theme.'

NYPD's 'Stop and Frisk' Is Basically a Black Guy Harassment Program

NYPD's 'Stop and Frisk' Is Basically a Black Guy Harassment Program | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

Stop and frisks have increased 600% since Bloomberg became mayor. In 70 out of 76 precincts, blacks and Latinos accounted for more than 50% of stops, and in 33 precincts they accounted for more than 90% of stops. Though they're only 4.7% of the city's population, black and Latino males between the ages of 14 and 24 accounted for 41.6% of stops in 2011. The number of stops of young black men exceeded the entire city population of young black men (168,126 as compared to 158,406). 90% of young black and Latino men stopped were innocent. Not only were black and Latino New Yorkersmore likely to be frisked than whites, but they were also less likely to be found with a weapon...
