How the Hannibal Lecter Books Spawned Two Different TV Projects

How the Hannibal Lecter Books Spawned Two Different TV Projects | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

Via TV Guide:

"Has Hollywood overdosed on too many fava beans with their nice chianti? Two characters from the same series of Thomas Harris books wound up in development simultaneously, and how that happened is an all-too typical story of tangled Hollywood rights.

NBC had already ordered 13 episodes of Bryan Fuller's Hannibal (based on The Silence of the Lambs killer Hannibal Lecter) when TV Guide Magazine broke the news last month that Lifetime is developing Clarice, revolving around Lambs' Clarice Starling character..."

“The Idler Wheel” is counting on the devotion of Ms. Apple’s fans. Before she appeared at South by Southwest her manager, Andy Slater, said he told Epic Records: “ ‘I want you to do nothing.’ I said: ‘Don’t make any posters. Don’t make any cards. Don’t put out a single. Just don’t say anything. Let her play the show. It’s been a few years. Let kids go to the show, film the thing, put it on their blogs, and you don’t need to do anything.’ ” Almost immediately after her set amateur video clips were on YouTube..."

Heed the signs: That low price for gas may be 'cash only'

Heed the signs: That low price for gas may be 'cash only' | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it
Via Sun Sentinel:

"If this has happened to you, you're not alone. Gas stations often advertise a cash-only price on the marquis that draws penny-pinchers in. By the time a customer notices the rate shown on the pump is higher for credit-card users, it's often too late.

That's infuriating and unfair, Broward commissioners are saying.

There's no law that forces gas stations to post both prices, cash and credit, on their roadside signs, or to alert customers to the higher rate, instead of the lower. But Broward commissioners agreed this week to consider one soon..."

10ft 1000lb bull shark caught in Florida Keys in 150ft of water | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

For scientist Neil Hammerschlag, it was just another Sunday. He was out cruising the reefs near the Florida Keys, hunting for sharks — not as trophies, but for research aimed at keeping them out of display cases and in the water.

"It's one of the biggest bull sharks I've ever caught, and it's the biggest bull shark I've ever tagged," Hammerschlag said — and he's tagged more than 1,000 sharks. "When this guy rocked up, it just took my breath away."

"Screenwriter Joe Eszterhas has published an e book for Amazon about the time he spent trying to work with Mel Gibson. Eszterhas is a controversial figure himself. After a brush with death, he writes, he became a born again Christian. He also discovered that his own Hungarian father was a Nazi collaborator. His recounting of the time he worked with Gibson is called “Heaven and Mel.” It’s a fascinating read and only costs $2.99. It confirms every bad thing about Mel Gibson from the inside: the anti-Semitism, alcoholism, rages, anger, etc. Here are a few excerpts, with some foul language that I have not redacted..."

Miami family marijuana growhouse business shut down by the feds

Miami family marijuana growhouse business shut down by the feds | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

"For years, the Santiesteban family ran an elaborate marijuana growing operation - from planting seeds under hydroponic lights to harvesting the potent plants and hauling them to New York to sell - with at least 17 growhouses scattered across.

They set up surveillance cameras, hired caretakers to guard their crops, and when family members identified a robber who had ripped off 30 plants, they helped kidnap him, prosecutors said. The man was shot and beaten to death, his body dumped on a roadway, his van torched in the Everglades.

On Tuesday, law enforcement agents finally shut down the massive operation - charging six family members and 10 others with conspiracy to distribute drugs - ending one of the largest marijuana enterprises in Miami-Dade..."
