MEXICO CITY (AP) — It was all caught on video: Five heavily armed policemen barge into a hotel in western Mexico before dawn and march out with three handcuffed men in underwear.

But police weren't making an arrest; they were apparently taking orders from a drug gang. Just hours after the three were seized, they were found asphyxiated and beaten to death...

Pentagon study: Suicides No. 2 cause of death in military | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

Via USA Today:

"The most common way that U.S. servicemembers die outside of combat is by their own hand, according to an analysis released by the Pentagon on Wednesday.

Since 2010, suicide has outpaced traffic accidents, heart disease, cancer, homicide and all other forms of death in the military besides combat, the report says. One in four non-combat deaths last year were servicemembers killing themselves..."

Skrawberry's Guide to Telling Your Kids You're a Stripper

Skrawberry's Guide to Telling Your Kids You're a Stripper | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

Via Cultist Miami:

Skrawberry,

I'm a stripper too (don't wanna say which club). I also have two kids and I'm a single mom. My son is going to be 8 years old, and my little girl is 5. So far they don't know what I do to make money, but I think my son is starting to figure things out. He's asking questions more and more, and I'm starting to feel like I have to tell him something.

I don't want him to hear something nasty from someone else instead of explaining to him how it really is. But I dont know how to explain it so he'll understand. I wondered, do you have any experience with this, or does someone you know? Do you think he's too young to know his mama strips? How would you tell him? And what about my daughter -- when should I tell her, and should it be a different conversation? This has me so nervous!!!

Five Things the Miami Heat Can Learn From the Miami Hurricanes

Five Things the Miami Heat Can Learn From the Miami Hurricanes | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

Via Miami New Times:

"Last night the Oklahoma City Thunder's staff introduced the Miami Heat to the sounds of Star Wars' "Imperial March." They intended it as some sort of cheap swipe. I couldn't help but chuckle. After all, I've been rooting for a team that's incorporated Darth Vader's theme music into their game day traditions for years. The Miami Hurricanes play cinema's evilest leitmotif every time their defense makes a third down stop, and those Miami Hurricanes have won not one, not two, not three, not four, but five championships.

Perhaps the Miami Heat of today might have a thing or two to learn from the great Hurricanes teams of yesteryear..."

Miami Heat Fans: Five Good Reasons to Hate the Oklahoma City Thunder

Miami Heat Fans: Five Good Reasons to Hate the Oklahoma City Thunder | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

Via Miami New Times:

"Last year, we made some rather foolhardy predictions about the NBA finals and ended up with a tattoo of Jason Terry indelibly inked on our pale white ass. So this year, we are avoiding any claims of clairvoyance and appealing to a baser emotion: pure, unbridled hatred.

Yes, the Miami Heat are the most despised sports team since the 1986 Hurricanes. And yes, the "Imperial March" song from Star Wars does follow Pat Reilly wherever he goes. But the truth is, the team America should really hate isn't the Heat. It's the Oklahoma City Thunder. Here are five damn good reasons why..."

Luther Campbell fights for right to coach high school football in Miami

Luther Campbell fights for right to coach high school football in Miami | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

Via Sports Illustrated:

In August, he'll enter his fourth season as a high school assistant coach at Miami Northwestern -- if Florida's Education Practices Commission will let him. For the past three seasons (two at Miami Central and one at Northwestern), Campbell has coached using a temporary certification. That certification expires at the end of the 2012-13 school year. To continue coaching in Miami-Dade County after that, Campbell will need a permanent certificate.

An administrative judge has recommended that Campbell be allowed to coach, but last week the Florida Department of Education appealed that recommendation. In the appeal, the department's attorney, Charles Whitelock, wrote that "the Petitioner lacks the required good moral character" to coach students. The state has investigated Campbell's past and present, and the Education Practices Commission will have to decide sometime this summer whether it should allow one of the men behind Me So Horny -- and other songs whose titles aren't printable in a family publication -- to influence high-schoolers...

After 23 Years, Mermaid Mural Must Come Down, Miami Beach Tells Washington Avenue's Tattoos by Lou

After 23 Years, Mermaid Mural Must Come Down, Miami Beach Tells Washington Avenue's Tattoos by Lou | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

Via Miami New Times "For 23 years, a pair of pert, painted, pasty-clad tits has greeted anyone strolling along 14th Street on South Beach. On any given day, you'll find a small crowd of locals, European tourists, and the odd bum gazing up at the vibrant mural of a mermaid riding on the back of a bald eagle. That's how you know you've arrived at Tattoos by Lou, one of the city's most storied tattoo parlors.

Just this week, however, Miami Beach code compliance officers have told Lou's to take down the famous mural. They argue that a touch-up back in 2000 means the painting no longer has a valid permit. Lou's owner and clients are pissed."

Twittergate: My Q&A About Yesterday's Jury Duty Hearing

Twittergate: My Q&A About Yesterday's Jury Duty Hearing | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

Via Miami New Times' Cultist:

"Being one of the most visible and outspoken citizens in Miami is hard work. Just ask director Billy Corben, who had to answer to the court Wednesday for tweeting during jury duty. Corben's tweets and Facebook updates did not divulge details of the armed robbery trial to his 7,045 Twitter followers; rather, they discussed the courtroom facilities and other things that had nothing to do with the actual case. Still, after Corben and his fellow jurors decided defendant Angelo Williams was guilty of armed robbery, the defendant's lawyer cried foul.

Yesterday, a judge decided not to hold Corben in contempt, nor to overturn the conviction of the armed robber. Cultist reached out to the filmmaker following the hearing and were treated to his exclusive, comprehensive take on the matter..."

Via the Orlando Sentinel:

"A trial date was set this morning for 11 former members of the Florida A&M University marching band in the hazing death of drum major Robert Champion.

Prosecutors say Champion, 26, died Nov. 19 when he was "pummeled to death" during the ritual which occurred after the Florida Classic, the annual football game between FAMU and rival Bethune-Cookman University.

Known to some as "Crossing Over," the rite required Champion to make his way from the front of the percussion bus to the back, plowing through fellow band members who blocked his path and punched and kicked him..."

Just how crazy was the Pacquiao/Bradley decision? Here are the stats... | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

Via Ken Pomeroy:

"Even if you have no interest in boxing (like me) you’ve heard about the bizarre decision by the judges of the Manny Pacquiao/Tim Bradley fight on Saturday night. Despite nearly everybody believing Pacquiao won the 12-round fight convincingly, two of the three judges gave the fight to Bradley prompting disbelief among observers. This caused me to wonder just how unlikely such a decision was.

In order to determine this I wanted to get an estimate of how likely it was for the rational judge to score a particular round for either fighter. I found 18 reporters of varying reputation that scored the fight round-by-round. Here’s how many of those people gave each round to Bradley..."
