America's least transparent administration gets even more secretive: Obama asserts executive privilege over Fast & Furious documents

America's least transparent administration gets even more secretive: Obama asserts executive privilege over Fast & Furious documents | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

Rep. Darrell Issa said Wednesday that he is pressing ahead with a committee vote to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress, despite an 11th-hour move by President Obama to exert executive privilege over the Fast and Furious documents at the heart of the dispute.

The announcement immediately touched off a caustic debate on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, as Democrats accused Issa of prosecuting a "political witch hunt" and Republicans stepped up their criticism of Holder's "stonewalling" over the Fast and Furious probe. Even for Washington, the tone at the hearing was decidedly bitter and accusatory.

The failed Fast and Furious operation attempted selling thousands of guns to arms dealers along the U.S.-Mexico border to trace them to leaders of drug cartels. However, many of them showed up in crime scenes, including the murder of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry...

Howard Schnellenberger unhinged — and having the time of his life

Howard Schnellenberger unhinged — and having the time of his life | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

Via University Press:

Ever since Howard Schnellenberger left football last year, after 54 years of coaching, after a 1-11 season, after the misery, there’s one question he keeps getting asked. And it’s annoying, really.

What are you doing now that you’re retired?

“And I say, Christ, I’m not retired,” he says. “I took a sideways step.”

Schnellenberger’s hidden now — the first football coach in FAU history, the man who created the entire program — tucked away on the second floor of the administration building, the last door on the right in a tight hallway filled with secretaries and computers and, well, business. Real work...

Jungle Island is NOT "historic" and if they can't pay their debt, they should close

Jungle Island is NOT "historic" and if they can't pay their debt, they should close | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

Jungle Island can't pay back $25 million in loans it owes to the City of Miami and HUD and now they want to double down and throw good public money after bad.

Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones absurdly compares it a true Florida landmark:

"We are not really talking about the future of this property," she said. "I don't want this to be another Miami Marine Stadium, that concerns me."

If they can't pay their debt, they gotta close.

'Our tax dollars at work: Hounding a 69-year-old marijuana offender who served 30 years in prison to pee in cups' | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

Via Miami New Times:

Robert Platshorn served thirty years in prison for smuggling pot into Florida. That's more than any other person has served for a marijuana offense in the United States. He'll turn 70 years old in November.

But it now appears clear that he will never be free from the federal government.

Platshorn, who was featured in the Rakontur documentary Square Grouper and this week won our Best of Miami award for "Best Local Boy Made Good", has become one of Florida's most prominent activists for medical marijuana, with his target demographic being the state's ailing elderly.

The guy's closer to Jack LaLanne than Pablo Escobar. But now-- despite claiming to have fulfilled his parole-- he's facing a return to prison for a failed piss test...

New York State Senate Republicans Kill Proposed "Public View" Marijuana Decriminalization Bill

New York State Senate Republicans Kill Proposed "Public View" Marijuana Decriminalization Bill | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

As we reported yesterday, State Senate Republicans killed a bill proposed by Governor Andrew Cuomo that would further decriminalize marijuana in the Empire State by closing a loophole that makes having weed in public a misdemeanor, while possessing weed in private is only a violation.

No skin off the gov's ass, though -- those "extreme" Republicans can look forward to facing voters in the fall, he says, and there's "no place" in New York for "extreme Conservative philosophy."

'Secret Service agents partied like rock stars on Obamas' Martha's Vineyard Vacation'

'Secret Service agents partied like rock stars on Obamas' Martha's Vineyard Vacation' | The Billy Pulpit | Scoop.it

MARTHA'S VINEYARD, Mass. – Long before President Obama's security detail was scandalized in Colombia and new revelations emerged last week about the Secret Service, members of the elite team earned an "Animal House" reputation at the blueblood vacation mecca of Martha's Vineyard.

Trashed rental homes, bad behavior and barroom brawls that have required the local police to step in have some disgusted Martha’s Vineyard homeowners vowing never to rent out to the Secret Service again. And while none of the disturbing behavior appeared to have any direct effect on the president’s safety, some occurred even as the president and his family were nearby.

One resident called police in the early morning on Aug. 18, 2011, about a party that went on until well past 4 a.m. on the day President Obama arrived for a nine-day vacation. Cars were parked on a lawn strewn with beer bottles and young women went in and out of the house as shouts from a spirited foosball game pierced the wee-hours air.

She said her husband called the Secret Service in Washington last year to complain about the rowdy behavior of agents and damage they caused to their home, but his gripe was dismissed by officials who told her “that’s what they do on vacation” – even though the agents were on assignment at the Vineyard.

“They left ammo behind, they told me things they shouldn’t have been telling me, things they shouldn’t be telling anyone about the details about how they protect the president. They let us hold their weapons, see all their stuff, they had huge house parties..."
