COLLIER COUNTY - A Golden Gate man was arrested after deputies say he tried to extort thousands of dollars from a North Naples woman in exchange for her two lost dogs.
Dathan Cyr, 43, is charged with extortion - a felony.
Deputies say it all started Monday when Andrea Michna got a text message from a number she didn't recognize. The sender asked if she was still looking for her two lost dogs.
Michna explained that her two white Samoyeds, 3-year-olds Ava and Snowdot, went missing on April 14 after getting loose in the Pelican Marsh community and that she had passed out fliers offering an unspecified reward for the dogs.
Michna responded to the text saying that she was still looking for her dogs.
Deputies say Cyr then texted Michna back, claiming to be a Latina female named Diana who loved in Immokalee and said that she had the dogs.
Deputies say in those texts, Cyr threatened to shoot the dogs if Michna did not pay him $8,000 cash.
That's when she called the sheriff's office.
Detectives quickly worked out a plan and a meeting with the suspect was arranged...
