Robert Lee Mitchell, 48, had been detained at the Sweet Bay grocery at 7131 N. U.S. 441. Officials said he concealed two cans of sardines worth $1.98.
A sheriff's deputy arrived on scene, and Mitchell told him he was homeless and living in a camp near State Road 326 and Interstate 75, according to a Marion County Sheriff's Office news release.
Despite the alleged theft, Mitchell told the deputy he had $2,700 in cash and a food stamp card with money on it, according to the Sheriff's Office. He emptied his pockets, removing the money, a pocket knife and a plastic bag of coins.According to the news release, Mitchell told him, "I've got a big bag of marijuana," and pulled a gallon-size freezer bag full of smaller baggies of pot out of a pants pocket...
