Lake Nona High School Principal Margaret Nampon sent a message to parents Wednesday that students will not be allowed to carry balloons or other gifts such as teddy bears and flowers to class Thursday, Valentine's Day. Any students who arrive at school with those items will be required to leave them in the administrative offices during the school day. Deliveries will be rejected.
Lake Nona parent Bonnie Shear was outraged by the ban.
"We have to bring joy and happiness back to our kids," said Shear, citing episodes of school violence. "Valentine's Day is a way to do that."
Nampon's Connect Orange message to parents said students would not be allowed to exchange gifts "in order to maintain our instructional focus and avoid distraction."
Cypress Creek High Principal Susan Storch also took a hard line against Cupid.
At Colonial High School, Principal Doug Loftus told parents that students can express their love – in moderation.
