OVIEDO — Robert McKissic Jr. is no moonshiner, he insists, just a tinkerer.
Yes, Oviedo police found a still in his backyard four weeks ago, and yes, they found several gallons of some kind of home brew in his attic. But it's not whiskey, and he's no hillbilly, he says.
"The still, that was just a science project," said a sheepish Mark Davis, 38, a friend who both men agree helped assemble the still out of an empty beer keg.
McKissic, 61, is retired, Davis was out of work. They saw a History Channel show about moonshiners last year and decided, "Shoot, we can make a still," McKissic said. "Didn't have anything else to do."
State law allows people to brew a limited amount of beer and to make wine at home but not hard liquor. Anyone caught with a gallon of it faces a possible five-year prison sentence...
