DAYTONA BEACH — A 29-year-old man choked a police officer Sunday and dove through a glass window at a beachside home before trying to escape in the ocean, police said.
Bleeding from a severe cut on his head, Samuel Scott, 29, of Daytona Beach swam to shore and surrendered after an almost 30-minute standoff with police, said Daytona Beach police Lt. Tom Pera.
Officers responded shortly after noon to a report of domestic violence at an apartment at 432 Auburn Drive. Scott “actively engaged” the officers, and one of the officers Tasered Scott to subdue him but it had no effect, Pera said.
Scott pulled one of the probes from his leg, according to the report. He continued to resist arrest and was sprayed in the face with mace.
Scott struck Officer Frank Geremiah in the right eye, then choked him, Pera said.
Scott then dove through a rear bedroom window, ran east to the beach approach across from Bellair Plaza on Atlantic Avenue and ventured about 50 to 60 yards into the water, Pera said...
