WEF released its Global Risks 2013 report in advance of meeting next week in Davos.

This is very true and scary. You can imagine us ending up in a situation where we are spending all of our capital (political and financial) responding to impacts of climate change, and can't afford to take the measures we need to stop it from worsening let along reduce CO2 levels in the atmosphere.

CO2 Concentration in "Panic and Repent" Scenarios

CO2 Concentration in "Panic and Repent" Scenarios | The Big Picture | Scoop.it
David Hodgson's insight:

"It's also worth noting that peak temperature is likely to be decades after peak atmospheric carbon.  So, from the point we start to get really serious, it will then be around fifty years until peak temperature. Dealing with this is going to be a life-long effort for all of us, and all of our children and grandchildren.

The larger point is - however late we've left it to act, it's always possible to make it much worse by waiting even longer."

Creating the new paradigm economy

Paradoxically, we believe the current stalemating of progressive reform may open up some unique strategic possibilities to transform institutions of the political economy over time. We call this third option evolutionary reconstruction. Like reform, evolutionary reconstruction involves step-by-step nonviolent change. But like revolution, evolutionary reconstruction changes the basic institutions of ownership of the economy, so that the broad public, rather than a narrow band of individuals (i.e., the “one percent”) owns more and more of the nation’s productive assets.

The world is running out of soil

Or rather, the world is running out of topsoil, the nutrient-rich soil in which we grow most of our food.

A rough calculation of current rates of soil degradation suggests we have about 60 years of topsoil left. Some 40% of soil used for agriculture around the world is classed as either degraded or seriously degraded -- the latter means that 70% of the topsoil, the layer allowing plants to grow, is gone. Because of various farming methods that strip the soil of carbon and make it less robust as well as weaker in nutrients, soil is being lost at between 10 and 40 times the rate at which it can be naturally replenished. Even the well-maintained farming land in Europe, which may look idyllic, is being lost at unsustainable rates.
