Desmos Graphing Calculator

Free Graphing Calculator, by Desmos.com.

Desmos online graphing calculator is easy to use and has a lot of functionality.  One feature I really like is the ability to export your graphs.  The exported images can be used in blogs, wikis, interactive posters, etc.

Other features of note are:

  • sliders --- allows you to move anything from a straight line to a curve
  • trace --- just click and hoover over whatever you want to trace

This blog post by Colleen Young explains more about the sliders and trace features in Desmos.

Mathematics Glossary

This is one of the best math dictionaries I've come across (thanks to Glen Holmes).  It's hosted by Alberta Learning (Alberta, Canada).  The beauty of this glossary of math terms is that the terms are often accompanied by "real-world" visuals and applets that students can manipulate to reinforce the point/term.

VoiceThread - Group conversations around images, documents, and videos

Transforming media into collaborative spaces with video, voice, and text commenting.

Voice Thread is one of my favorite applications for use with math students.  It's a fabulous tool for engaging students in conversations around multimedia.  Voice Thread also allows you to extend your classroom.  Students can create a Voice Thread and have parents, friends, or strangers comment on their work.

Check out Voice Thread K-12 for creating a safe environment for learning.

Have students create interactive posters with Glogster.  They can include videos, images and more on their posters.  Posters can be edited and shared at any time.

Having students create interactive posters is a great way to increase engagement and have students reflect on their learning.  Consider having students comment on each other's work and then make revisions based on comments.  This will taking learning to a new level!
