Getting Kids Engaged with Primary Sources | Cool Tools by Richard Byrne | The Digital Shift

Getting Kids Engaged with Primary Sources | Cool Tools by Richard Byrne | The Digital Shift | The Best of Web 2.0 for schools | Scoop.it

"I vividly remember being disappointed during my first year of teaching: my students weren’t nearly as excited about primary source documents as I was. Primary source documents, as you know, offer readers a unique, real-world perspective, and I thought my kids would love delving into them. I soon learned that my disappointing results weren’t due to the documents that I’d selected, but rather how I was having students use them. That first year, they weren’t doing anything but reading them. Today, Web-based tools enable students to discover more primary sources than ever before and engage them in dynamic ways. The following items are some of my favorites."

The World’s Largest Repository of Free Online Learning Tutorials

The World’s Largest Repository of Free Online Learning Tutorials | The Best of Web 2.0 for schools | Scoop.it

Here’s a common scenario. Someone emails and asks about an elearning tutorial I have on the blog. It’s not always easy to find the specific tutorial buried in a given post. In fact, there are many times I either forgot that I had created that tutorial or I can’t recall where it’s at either. I know. It’s part of getting older.

Today I am going to fix that. I have listed every blog post that has a video tutorial that shows how to create something related to online learning. So, if you’re just getting started with building online learning courses (or new to the blog), now you have a handy resource with links to all sorts of rapid elearning tutorials.

The Global Search for Education: Social Learning

The Global Search for Education: Social Learning | The Best of Web 2.0 for schools | Scoop.it
An impressive 17 million plus users worldwide are doing their Edmodo. The company's mission since it's beginnings has been to provide a free and safe platform that allows students and teachers to come together to collaborate and learn.
Mark Gleeson's insight:

Does Edmodo's Digital Citizen Starter Kit handle the challenge of educating kids to be good digital citizens? The answer is "Yes!" according to Bianca Hewes, a high school English teacher in Sydney, Australia who's also been doing awesome things with Edmodo since 2009 (including connecting 30 of her students with registered Edmodo teachers in the US, South America and England to mentor their individual writing projects). "Edmodo is a social network with training wheels," says Bianca. "By introducing it at a young age, teachers are able to develop the habits of the mind that are essential for students to be good digital citizens. Students learn to use appropriate language, to speak kindly and with compassion, to be supportive rather than critical, and to ask thoughtful questions."

50 Activities To Promote Digital Media Literacy In Students

50 Activities To Promote Digital Media Literacy In Students | The Best of Web 2.0 for schools | Scoop.it

"Literacy is changing–not at its core necessarily, but certainly at its edges as it expands to include new kinds of “reading.”

Digital media is quickly replacing traditional media forms as those most accessible to most 21st century learners. The impact of this change is extraordinarily broad, but for now we’ll narrow it down to changes in how learners respond to the media they consume."

8 Excellent Free Timeline Creation Tools for Teachers ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

8 Excellent Free Timeline Creation Tools for Teachers ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | The Best of Web 2.0 for schools | Scoop.it
Creating timelines is another important digital skill to be added to the the 33 digital skills we have compiled before. Students should be able to easily create their own learning timelines and share them with each other. This can have a huge positive impact on their overall learning process. Educational Technology and Mobile Learning  has sifted through some of the best free timeline making tools and come up with the list below.
Just to refresh your mind, a timeline is " a way of displaying a list of events in chronological order, sometimes described as a project artifact. It is typically a graphic design showing a long bar labelled with dates alongside itself and usually events labelled on points where they would have happened.' ( from Wikipedia ). - See more at: http://www.educatorstechnology.com/2012/08/8-excellent-free-timeline-creation.html#sthash.kYAIKd8B.dpuf
