Menopause -What Is It? - Dr. Richard J. Santen

Menopause -What Is It? - Dr. Richard J. Santen | The Best of Google Knol | Scoop.it

In order to understand menopause*, it is first necessary to define what occurs before this change, and why. After the onset of puberty at approximately age 11-13, a girl’s ovaries produce two hormones, estradiol, and progesterone in a cyclic fashion (Figure 1). At the same time, the ovaries release one egg per month, which is then available for fertilization by a male sperm.

Buttermilk Pancakes - Scott Jenson

Buttermilk Pancakes - Scott Jenson | The Best of Google Knol | Scoop.it

The classic American pancake has many variations, but the buttermilk pancake is its highest form. Properly made, it is extra light, almost nothing in your mouth. Its flavor is also more complex, revealing a depth beyond just the syrup poured over the top. It is also, unfortunately, one of the rarest finds in American kitchens: most pancakes are either microwaved (shudder) or made from a mix, which is too bad as they are so easy to make. Once you've had them like this, there is no going back...

Origin of the Solar System - Kevin Spaulding

Origin of the Solar System - Kevin Spaulding | The Best of Google Knol | Scoop.it

Wondering how the planets and universe formed is a question that dates back many thousands of years. Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences in the world and for good reason. It takes into account the biggest subject that can be possibly studied-- the universe. To understand the universe it is important to understand our immediate solar system. How does it work, how did it come to be, and how old is it? Luckily Astronomy has been able to give a pretty good understanding of how the solar system originated and when.

HDR Photography - John Burgreen

HDR Photography - John Burgreen | The Best of Google Knol | Scoop.it

HDR, or high dynamic range photography is the craft of bracketing a series of photos. then carefully merging the bracketed images back into an .hdr or .exr file format. After being merged, the file is then tonemapped back to an 8- or 16-bit image.

What's the potential result? A beautifully detailed and carefully crafted HDR image with a style and elegance all its own. Using this technique to capture a scene can allow you to view the world as never before. Below is a step-by-step process that I personally use to create my hdr photos.

Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

Gastrointestinal Endoscopy | The Best of Google Knol | Scoop.it

The development of flexible fiberoptic instruments in the 1960-70s allows light to bend with the instruments (endoscopes) so that organs beyond the very top and bottom of the gastrointestinal tract can reached and visualized, such as the whole colon, stomach, duodenum, and upper portion of the small intestine, the jejunum. Further refinements in endoscopes including video instruments has allowed for improved visualization of the GI tract, ability to sample tissues and apply therapy, and reach even the most inaccessible of GI locations (the entire small bowel including all of the jejunum and ileum).

Urinary tract obstruction - Marshall L. Stoller, MD | The Best of Google Knol | Scoop.it

After urine is produced in the kidneys, it must pass down to the bladder where it can be stored before being eliminated from the body through the urethra. At almost any point in this pathway, urine can become obstructed and may lead to kidney damage. When severe, this can cause a patient to require a kidney transplant or dialysis to sustain life. The most common causes include stones, strictures, tumors, and bladder dysfunction.

High Cholesterol - Robert Rosenson, MD | The Best of Google Knol | Scoop.it

Cholesterol and triglycerides are fats that are an integral part of cells, and that may dissolve in alcohol but are insoluble in water. They are thus insoluble in the blood. In order for lipids to be transported in blood, they are packaged as lipoprotein. Lipoproteins have a shell of phospholipids and proteins that allow them to dissolve in blood. The lipids, transported as lipoprotein, are transported to various tissues for energy utilization, lipid deposition, steroid hormone production, and bile acid formation.

Global English - a Paradigm shift - Peter Baskerville

Global English - a Paradigm shift - Peter Baskerville | The Best of Google Knol | Scoop.it

Change has been the one constant in the development of the human race. But never has change been so pervasive as in the past decade. Think about the massive changes taking place to our environment, technology, communications and economies just to name a few ... and so it is with language, in the form of Global English.

Paradigm shifts, where entire regions and nations change the way things are done, are fast becoming the norm. I have already covered the paradigm shift taking place in education in another Knol, but I now wish to cover the inter-related one talking place in global language and interpersonal communications.

Curator Comment: Although this Knol is in desparate need of editing to remove content that is extraneous to the topic, taking time to work through the maze will pay readers handsomely with well-argued points about scientific publishing in the era of Web 2+.

Knol's ability to embed audiovisuals (slides, video, arts, design) and incorporate communication devices like blogs, facebook, twitter, RSS feeds puts it in the forefront of innovative ways to transmit knowledge. Knol is ahead and superior to Wikipedia and traditional journal or books and e-publication platforms. The current status and future of research articles published in biomedical journals vs knol is discussed.

The future of Knol books and Knol Journals is covered. Examples: The concept of Journal of Therapeutic Biotechnology (JTB) was advanced in Jan 2009. The launch of PLoS Currents Influenza brings high quality to the knol platform.

Efficient simulation of the spatial transmission dynamics of influenza - Meng-Tsung Tsai

Efficient simulation of the spatial transmission dynamics of influenza - Meng-Tsung Tsai | The Best of Google Knol | Scoop.it

We describe a significant improvement in the efficiency of an individual-based stochastic disease simulation framework that has been used for multiple previous studies. We quantify the efficiency of the revised algorithm and present an alternative parameterization of the model in terms of the basic reproductive number. We apply the model to the population of Taiwan and demonstrate how the location of the initial seed can influence spatial incidence profiles and the overall spread of the epidemic. Differences in incidence are driven by the relative connectivity of alternate seed locations.

The Perception of “Racial” Traits - Frank W Sweet

The Perception of “Racial” Traits - Frank W Sweet | The Best of Google Knol | Scoop.it

A few years ago, Eugene Robinson, a Black writer for the Washington Post, visited Brazil. An outgoing, likeable young man, he soon made friends with English-speaking Brazilians his own age. A particularly attractive young woman invited him to join her and her friends in a relaxing day on the incomparable beaches of Rio de Janeiro. Despite minor, often humorous language confusion, the day started well. Eugene was fascinated with Brazilian culture and customs and, while satisfying his curiosity about their world, his Brazilian friends asked him about life in the United States. The problem started when he asked them what is was like to be Black in Brazil.

Neck Complaints/Cervical Spondylosis

Neck Complaints/Cervical Spondylosis | The Best of Google Knol | Scoop.it

Neck pain is a common complaint and is almost always a benign condition. Over 10% of the adult population recalls at least 3 episodes of neck pain within a 3-year period. One good way to approach the subject is to consider source of pain based on anatomic principles: what are the pain sensitive structures of the neck? To answer the question one must have an understanding of the basic anatomy of the neck/cervical spine and then consider what common or uncommon processes can disturb normal function thereby causing pain and other disabilities such as weakness or numbness.
