24 People Who Applied for the World's Toughest Job Were In for Quite a Surprise

24 People Who Applied for the World's Toughest Job Were In for Quite a Surprise | The Best of Art & Imagination | Scoop.it
Here's a pretty cool project from Mullen for a client we won't immediately reveal, lest we spoil the surprise. (Scroll down to the bottom of credits, or watch the video to find out.) The Boston agency posted this job listing online for a "director of operations" position at a company called Rehtom Inc.

Rahm Emanuel Has Sharp Words for Chris Christie, Elizabeth Warren, and This Interviewer | The Best of Art & Imagination | Scoop.it
Stark raving Rahm on gentrification, the middle east, and the perils of income-inequality politics
Linda Alexander's insight:

I admit to being hooked on the TV show "Chicagoland". After all, it's mostly about schools and children, and I spend a lot time there.  And because of the show, love him or leave him, intrigued by Rahm's quirky and brazenly blunt personality.  Rahm's so tough he could be a Clevelander. This Q & A showcases his thorny, almost humorous style.   I certainly wouldn't want to interview him!  Oh, and good luck Chicago Teacher's Union getting through to this guy...ain't gonna happen.

One of the best top 20 lists compiled!  My Vermont friends will feel they REALLY nailed it (although I would also include Burlington but maybe too big?).  The list includes one of Cleveland, Ohio's top get-away places--an area that deserves the #1 spot.  Lastly,  there is no one in Arizona that wouldn't say Sedona is one of the most scenic places on the entire earth....

Common point between BuzzFeed and Time magazine? Both started as a news clipping service. | The Best of Art & Imagination | Scoop.it
BuzzFeed co-founder Jonah Peretti wrote a kind of open letter to his employees recently, in which he compared the rapidly growing viral-content empire to Time magazine.

Guillaume Decugis's curator insight, March 11, 2014 12:55 PM

Quoting from this letter: "Time began as a clipping service in a small office. A group of writers subscribed to a dozen newspapers and summarized the most important stories, rewriting the news in a more digestible format. BuzzFeed also started as a clipping service in a small office seven years ago. Instead of subscribing to newspapers, we surfed the web.”"

Interesting read showing how great content curation was the starting point in both stories.

Elliot Walker's curator insight, March 27, 2014 6:17 AM

Interesting point made here about content curation, with BuzzFeed comparing itself to Time magazine as they both started as a news clipping service. Which leads to the question: is there any truly unique content in the online news space?

30 Beautiful Photographs of Cities from Around the World | inspirationfeed.com | The Best of Art & Imagination | Scoop.it
Cities are incredible. If you take a moment and think about how fast our technology evolved in the last 200 years, you'll be amazed. The evolution of mankind has skyrocketed as well as the need for Earth's resources. Essentially we're a bunch of ants on a rock that's floating in space, which is inside a galaxy that is inside a thing called the Universe... I mean, it's pretty wild if you stop to think about it.
Linda Alexander's insight:

Well, this settles it--no desire to head to Russia.  However, Bern & Prague (been there) are magical as are a host of other cities.  Chicago picture is from a place where I have tried to capture downtown without as much success.  Beautiful photography! What's your favorite post?

A Manifesto for Schools Visiting Art Museums

A Manifesto for Schools Visiting Art Museums | The Best of Art & Imagination | Scoop.it

An important aspect of our role as art museum educators is to welcome and induct teachers and their students into museum protocols in a way that is warm and inviting.

Via Salome Tam
Linda Alexander's insight:

As a former tour guide at the Cleveland Museum of Art, I realize the importance of making children and schools welcome.  There are some museum employees that have difficulty with the noise level that accompanies groups of children.  It is vital to keep students engaged in their visit rather than scolding behavior being completely unrealistic regarding behavioral norms!

Howard Rheingold's curator insight, February 26, 2014 1:35 PM

Apps like this are best approached with an open-minded skepticism. Open-minded because we're just beginning to see work on attention tools; skeptical because any mention of "neuroscience" raises the possibility of what has been called "neurobullocks" -- knowledge about the relationship between neural and attentional processes is very often nowhere near as precise as promoters would have us believe. Nevertheless, this is on my list to try out. I'll welcome feedback, both positive and negative, from anyone who tries this.

David McGavock's curator insight, February 27, 2014 4:56 PM

I concur with Howard Rheingold's advice that consumers be wary of claims to boost attention and productivity. At the same time ,improving attention is a very useful skill in these daze of distraction. We are just learning more about what works. Share your review of this and other such apps with Howard.

I love Gladwell!  Here he talks about how our disadvantages become advantages--often later in life.  For example, "the dyslexic  who compensates from a young age: If you can't complete your first-grade reading assignment, you get a friend to do it for you. That's delegating."

Carolyn D Cowen's curator insight, February 22, 2014 6:32 AM

Gladwell gets props for helping to bring attention to dyslexia and the abilities many people with dyslexia often have. This is fertile ground for further exploration that may open doors of hope and possibility. But many (most?) people with dyslexia do not climb to the lofty heights of a Richard Branson and empirical research is a bit more cautious on the subject of a dyslexia-talent link. (See "Dyslexia and Visuospatial Processing Strengths: New Research Sheds Light"—http://www.interdys.org/DyslexiaAndVisuospatialProcessing.htm . Also see http://lawrenceschool.wordpress.com/2012/11/08/rethinking-dyslexia/ for deeper discussion about "dyslexia as a gift" and the need to rethink priorities.
