The Rijksmuseum in Holland had an idea:

Let's bring the art to the people and then, hopefully, they will come to see more - at the museum.

They took one painting of Rembrandt’s from 1642, “Guards of the Night” and brought to life the characters in it, placed them in a busy mall and the rest you can see for yourself!

When photography of farmland becomes an art form..!

Seth Dixon's curator insight, May 22, 4:33 PM

"Aerial photographer Alex MacLean estimates he has spent about 6,000 hours in the sky photographing American farms.  His unique perspective depicts the dramatically changing agricultural landscape in the U.S., something he has been drawn to since he started flying nearly 40 years ago.  'I’ve been photographing agricultural lands since I started flying, in the early 1970s,' he says. 'I was drawn to the aesthetics of farmland, in part because of its natural response to environmental conditions, climates, soils and topography…A lot of what I photograph is through discovery of seeing crops, seeing patterns.'

Mary Rack's curator insight, May 23, 10:28 AM

These are really beautiful and interesting, but I wish  photos could also reveal what substances are used on the land: fertilizers, pest killers, etc. I will go to his site and see if he addresses that.

MacLean's http://www.alexmaclean.com/ is a rich treasure trove of beauty and information! I could lose myself in it for the rest of the day. I recommend it to all thoughtful people.

Linda Alexander's insight:

I simply love this perspective on art: "One of the great functions of art is to help us imagine what it is like to be not ourselves, what it is like to be someone or something else, what it is like to live in another skin, what it is like to live in another body, and in that sense to surpass ourselves, to go out beyond ourselves." --Adrienne Rich (May 16, 1929 — March 27, 2012)

Linda Alexander's insight:

Yes, a really interesting list to review and consider in terms of their creative focus or the company they actually represent. Let's take Nate Silver, listed at #1 here.  Nate is asked if big data is the next revolution. Nate responds that we almost never know the next revolution before it actually happens.  That's true...

As for Nate Silver himself the article shares, "he has shown every doubter, with almost unerring consistency, that a skinny supernerd with a big data set and a killer algorithm can be a swashbuckler, too. Silver's Wikipedia entry now clocks in at more than 6,100 words--about double the length of the entry on Bob Woodward, the legendary Watergate reporter. No journalist has ever become so famous so fast, let alone so fluent in statistics.
