Ghost Town

Ghost Town | The audience left 20 years ago | Scoop.it
Another baby grand, too sad for words.
Larkworthy Antfarm's insight:

There Will Come Soft Rains

There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;

And frogs in the pools singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white;

Robins will wear their feathery fire,
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;

And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.

Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree,
If mankind perished utterly;

And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn
Would scarcely know that we were gone.

Sara Teasdale 1884-1933

Al Ow En Spooks Me

Al Ow En Spooks Me | The audience left 20 years ago | Scoop.it
The Palace Theatre opened in June 1911 as the third Los Angeles home of the San Francisco-based Orpheum vaudeville circuit. Along with the Pantages Theatre a block north, it marked the migration of the theatre district from Main Street to Broadway, two blocks west. It was renamed the Palace when the fourth Orpheum opened in the 800 block in 1926, and became a movie theatre, inaugurating a policy of double features. It closed to the paying public in late 2000.
Larkworthy Antfarm's insight:

Abandoned theaters photographed by Nick Bradshaw.  This one reminds me of the urban entrance to the underworld.

The Creepy World of Abandoned Asylums | The audience left 20 years ago | Scoop.it

Yves Marchand & Romain Meffre Photography - The Ruins of Detroit

Yves Marchand & Romain Meffre Photography - The Ruins of Detroit | The audience left 20 years ago | Scoop.it
Larkworthy Antfarm's insight:

30 billion dollars in debt.  80,000 abandoned buildings.  Many with the belongings left behind as if the residents had been forced to flee a catastrophic disaster.   The first American city to die.  A ghost of itself.  Loved by so many.   Yet left to crumble.  A reminder of human frailty.  In this center of commerce where the  industrialized age's  greatest advances were once heralded to the world, we now see only its decline and sad destruction.  It is its own monument to its proud past.

The photographs smell of must and rotting floorboards.  Moth eaten, dusty rooms and never ending corridors full of falling plaster and broken glass.

A Noiseless Patient Spider

A Noiseless Patient Spider | The audience left 20 years ago | Scoop.it
Larkworthy Antfarm's insight:

A NOISELESS, patient spider,
I mark’d, where, on a little promontory, it stood, isolated;
Mark’d how, to explore the vacant, vast surrounding,

It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself;

Ever unreeling them—ever tirelessly speeding them.

And you, O my Soul, where you stand,

Surrounded, surrounded, in measureless oceans of space, Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing,—seeking the spheres, to connect them;

Till the bridge you will need, be form’d—till the ductile anchor hold;

Till the gossamer thread you fling, catch somewhere, O my Soul. --Walt Whitman

When Paul Koudounaris first heard of the existence of jewel-studded skeletons hidden in the forests of Germany, he envisioned "something from the Brothers Grimm combined with an Iron Maiden video.” He wasn't far off.
Larkworthy Antfarm's insight:

Apparently, collecting the remains of the saintly was a full-time cottage industry in Medieval  Germany.   Here in a series of weird photographs, Koudounaris offers a fascinating glimpse at saints bedecked like beauty queens on Mardi Gras floats.
