Chinas New Agenda

Via TJ Scalf
Gianna Marra's insight:

China seems to be a very confusing and unorganized gorvernment.  I really do not agree with there way of doing things, you would think they would do things differently. China needs to open up more and get help or there people will eventually go against them.

TJ Scalf's curator insight, May 27, 2014 10:16 AM

The Labor camp issues that are happening in China seem to be coming to an abrupt halt. The new committee has sent forth a new movement that will prevent people like Shin from having to live trapped in the camp forced to work just because of what his grandfather had done. This is a huge new step towards a better tomorrow for everyone in not only China but North Korea too. If China can lesson  the harshness of its laws, then the ones who can escape from North Korea will have rights when they get into China. They also need to help push for more rights in its neighboring country. Also this can help China come aboard on the new plan for the UN to step in. Shin and his family had to live in the camps and work for nothing. The labor camps are a terrible system that shouldn't still be in affect today.

The Forgotten Children

Via Maddison
Gianna Marra's insight:

This article seemed to be very sad and hard to read, If I got told my parents died or I had to live in a different area then them as a young child I do not think I could handle it. These children were very strong to do this and be able to stay positive. These kind of stories really incourage me.

Maddison's curator insight, May 21, 2014 9:47 AM

There’s this feeling that the article gives off at the beginning, talking about how “(They Were Children)”. Making you feel remorse and sadness. It explains how there are exhibits that “come from the knowledge of how soon many of the kids were to be sent to their deaths in Nazi concentration camps.” The roundup is now known as the “Vel d’Hiv”, which comes from the “Velodorme d’Hiver in the citys 15th Arroundissment housing the detainees.” It then proceeds to talk about numbers of 4500 French police officers rounded up 12,884 jews, including 4015 children. Now doing the math, that means that a little less the half were children. It also talks about how a total of 76,000 Jews were deported and more than half of the 11,400 children sent to the gas chambers were from Paris. This sets the tone to be dark and heavy which makes me personally want to go back and help. In one sentence it talks about how there is a poem hanging on the wall that reads the first sentence to say “my fathers dead, my mothers dead…” How can one hear that and not want to know more? The article then proceeds to talk about the exhibition itself. Explaining how the French were in denial, not accepting their past. But not all of the Jews died, some of them avoided death and deportation by the efforts of religious organizations and groups. It also explains how the limitations were out past Paris but extended to central and south central France. Here is says children had joined the refugees from Spain, Italy, Poland, and even Germany.

Female suicide bomber

Female suicide bomber | The attack- Kabul | Scoop.it
Gianna Marra's insight:

This picture relates to my book because in the novel I read it is all about a female suicide bomber and this picture is of a female suicide bomber. My novel was about a married women who had a husband and she did not let her husband know anything that she was going to do. She is now known as a female suicide bomber who injuried many and killed some.

Gianna Marra's insight:

This article is about the battle between Israelis and Palestinians, they have conflict in many different things. The leaders for each side are not agreeing to certain things which is making trouble with everybody. They say that the Palestinians will not win because of much smaller there country is getting, unlike Isreal which is growing with population.
This article relates to my book because a part in the book has a conflict with the female suicide bombers husband and a leader of the place of worship. The husband if trying to figure out all the pieces as to why she would do such a thing and the leader says he does not know, but will not let her husband into the place of worship. This makes the husband more curious as to why he is not allowed in he sneeks around and finally meets with the leader. Once the husband spoke his piece and demanded to know the leader told him to get out, there was a little physical conflict with the leaders people but the husband eventually left. This is similiar to the article where there are two leaders arguing about something very important for there countries. The leader of Isreal looks out for it's people just like the husband looks over his wife in the novel.

The amercian embassy is also placed in Tel Aviv, Some countries are still trying to make alliences and treaties. Tel Aviv is the place of all there embassies and legations.
This article relates to my book because some of the things take place in Tel Aviv.

The story of Hasna Maryi is unique. The way she died is becoming disturbingly more common in Iraq
Gianna Marra's insight:

This article is about female suicide bombers in the middle east. Most people wouldn't think women to be the cause of a bomb but 65% of women are, They could do it for social class reasons, religious reasons, Economical reasons, and because of military occupations. The article talks about what motivates women to do an act like this, also talks about why they do it, and why women are easier to complete this act. What motivates women can vary for instance if a women was in a religion that orders her to do as the highest power says she would have to do as she was told, even if that is risking her life. Another example would be there social class ranking, they could use a lower class women to do there dirty work. Women do this for many reasons, one being that they see the inequality from women and men and it all adds into a bigger reason. Women want to be equal and want to help in any way they can. Suicide bombing is a lot easier for women to do because they are not expected to do such a violent task, women are much gentler and sweeter. Another reason would be women can reach a high-profile target, Nobody thinks women would kill an entire room. Suicide bombers are more likely to be women now a days because of how easily they can do it.
This article connects to my scope because it talks about women suicide bombers in the middle east, I didn't think 65% of suicide bombers were women. Women want everything to be equal even if it means to risk there lives. In turkey 76% of suicide bombers are women. Suicide bombers are more common and the crazy part is women are the common suicide bombers. The novel I read relates to this article because the book is about a female suicide bomber, her husband tries to find out why she did it. This article would help her husband because he would know how she thinks and possiblities as to why she would do such a thing to herself and the others around her.

Tsotsi is part of this serious gang in South Africa. His name means nothing more than a thug. He would rob and steal from anybody that he came across. He was the angry black leader by the way. His life changed when one day he stole a baby. At the time he didn't know why he did it, but he felt that it needed to be done. Tsotsi started to change and he didn't know why. Then he noticed that he started to care for the baby. He didn't know why, but he would do anything for this baby. Tsotsi stated to remember his childhood and how peaceful his life used to be until he got caught up into gang violence. He was hanging out with the wrong people. One thing led to another and before he knew it he was robbing and stealing from stores and people. He started to stay away from his gang members and tried to change his life around. Die Aap (gang member) was asking him where you been at and why aren't you around anymore. Tsotsi made something up. So the gang members started to become angry with Tsotsi because they felt that he was family and one day he just abandoned them. Tsotsi hid the baby by this building that was going to be torn down. He didn't know that it was going to be torn down. Then he saw the construction workers starting to tear it down and then he yelled stop stop! People also yelled stop because Tsotsi was yelling stop. He didn't make it in time. The walls crushed the baby. He couldn't believe it. He stated to go to church more, but people still seen him as a thug. There was one kid who didn't. Tsotsi would try to talk with him, but the owner of the church wouldn't want him around. She felt that he was a bad kid. Tsotsi tried to change his ways, but it was hard for him.

I like this picture you explained the reasoning of why you picked this book very well. This picture really made me think about what happens around us in the world.

Francesca Grossi's curator insight, May 27, 2014 10:06 AM

Though I can only assume this women is begging for money to support herself and her children it has been shown that most women from here do so. As shown in my last video clip once a women is divorced her es husband no longer has any responsible of her and their children. This makes is extremely difficult especially since women make less than half of what a man makes when working.

The attack

Summary of the novel I read

Gianna Marra's insight:

The attack was a book about a doctor named Amin, he lives in Kabul and he is married. His wife goes to visit her mother everyday and takes the train there. One day there was a bomb at a cafe shop and Amin was worrying about his wife because he did not hear from her. Later in the night of the bomb Amin got a phone call from the hospital, he went to the hospital and his friend showed him his wife's body. His wife had died in the cafe during the bomb, she was a suicide bomber. Amin did not believe it at first and kept fighting it. he thought the police had no proof but they showed him all the proof. Amin decided to go to there dream house and he found a letter from his wife there it said "What use is happiness when it's not shared, Amin my love? My joys faded away every time yours didn't follow. You wanted children. I wanted to deserve them. No child is completely safe if it has no country. Don't hate me. Sihem" Amin realized after that the police were right. He had no idea who his wife was anymore, he was depressed and decided to go to Bethlahem to be with his family. He wanted to forget about this and move on.

My scopes are Tel Aviv which is a place where Amins wife was were his wife actually went instead of Nazareth where her mother lives. "Be reasonable for a second, Doctor. If your wife lied to you, if she made you believe she was going to NAzareth and then sneaked back into Tel Aviv as soon as your back was turned, that means she wasn't playing fair with you". Tel Aviv was not where she was supposed to be and there was soomething in that area to make her do what she did.Another one of my scopes is Suicide bombing in the middle east, this applies to my book because Amin's wife is being accused of being a suicide bomber. "It wasn't a planted bomb; it was a suicide attack. Everything suggests that the person who blew herself up in that restaurant was your wife, Amin" Navid who is a friend of Amin said. Amin's wife was the reason of the bomb, they think she is apart of a private terroist group to ruin there country. Amin has no idea who his wife is anymore he is lost.

Gianna Marra's insight:

This video clip tells and shows a story about a prison were failed attempt Female suicided bombers are held and lived. These women attempted to do the act of bomber a part of a city and got arrested because it failed. The video clipped really talked about a women who was being held there for 4 years now, she does have a family and she talks about why she did it. She did this to let her children be free they would not be able to play of go anywhere and she wanted them to be free and live a normal life. Her plan did not work as she thought it was going to but she still loves her family and wants to make it happen. This video also talked and showed a after scene of a suicide bomb where 80 people were injuried and 3 died, It happened on mothers day a man had flowers to cover up the bomb and acted as if he was going to give them to his wife and then he blew himself up and harmed others.
This video clip is similiar to the novel I read because it was showing and talking about the female suicide bombers and reasons to why they do such things. Even though most of them failed at attempting it they tell there reasons as to why they wanted to. My novel shows bits and pieces as to why she did it but there are many different reasons why women do this.

The mind of a female suicide bomber

Gianna Marra's insight:

The article "The mind of a female suicide bomber" is a story about a family where a brother by the name of Thamer did not complete a mission he offered to do which was risk his body for a suicide bomber. Hasna is his sister that helped him build his plan and bomb, she wanted him to be well known in his country like he should of been. Once she heard about his death she was excited to hear what else came alone, but nothing did so she was upset. She locked herself in her room for a week and the rest of her family thought she was dead. Hasna after a week decided that she would finish her brothers mission and hopefully be sucessful.Hasna did complete the mission and she was succesful.
This article has to do with my scope because it tells a story about a female suicide bomber which has gotten to be a common reaccurance in the middle east. The novel I read which was "The attack" related a lot to this article because the main idea is about a mans wife who was a suicide bomber. For instance in the novel the husband of the suicide bomber was not sure what she was up to the entire time, and in the article the family of the girl had no idea what she was doing either. Both the women from the article and from the novel are very similiar, they both did something for a guy they looked up to and for there country. They wanted to be known to the world on a positive note to there people.
