Shaun Tan is known for is wonderfully, powerful, emotive children's books with a large focus on art to convey meaning. An interesting project that he has participated in, is providing sculpture pictures for Philip Pullman's Grimms. Shaun Tan's sculptures can provide a deep and rich resource for demonstrating how the overlooked art aspect of sculpture can be used to covey meaning for words and stories.

 Chip Kidds 'Go: A Kid's Guide to Graphic Design' is an interesting look at graphic design but in a easy format for young readers. The Brain Pickings site reviews it best...

"a refreshing addition to these nonfiction children’s books about the arts and sciences, inviting kids to learn not only about the basic practicalities of design as a discipline but also to awaken to the essence of design as a sensemaking mechanism for the world".

This book no doubt would offer a springboard for rich learning activities and discussion on deciphering, and understanding visual literacies/digital texts.
